Intended to tie for relaxation this afternoon. A flu of sorts is knocking me down. Didn’t get far with the tying of a simple wet fly. The materials are simple and only the tan CDC feather is not shown. The two ply yarn is a simple, thin yarn found at a yarn store in many colors. The wire was dark olive and perhaps a lighter olive was in order to create a better segmentation along the abdomen. Maybe later…right now I am practicing mind control.

“… my only regret is that you, as much as we and thousands of other fishers around the world have to be giving the fight against mega-projects that threaten the sustainability of resources. It seems to be one of the new responsibilities of the modern fisherman, to defend the waters of the advance of “progress”.
Is there a need for mineral extractions on the level it occurs around the world? Is it inherently evil in our eyes by the industry alone? If there were no contamination would it still be unacceptable because of the eyesore? What are the legitimate needs and levels of need around the world? Is it possible to mine without contamination? Is this simply about anti-big,anti-outside conglomerates, have’s and have not’s? Does fly fishing trump minerals? Just questions I ponder.
Mendoza FF and Decolando FF frequently take on these issues re the lack of stewardship of the earth’s resources in Chile, Argentina, Brazil and elsewhere.
While exploring Reinaldo Ovando’s excellent site, I noted he has created a tutorial fly fishing channel. It has excellent information and the mayfly piece (Dean Hodson) was informative (note the typical position of tied emergers v. actual positioning. Perhaps the Klinkhammer posture is more for stillborns?). There are some exceptional South American sites with cutting edge technology to be found. Yes! You can go fishing. A little preparation and wa la, or no, is it voila?
There are many reasons we start and continue to fly fish (and the related pursuits). I started 46+ years ago because of a neighbor friend. I watched him tying flies for a local merchant. At the time, I was not drawn to the tying as much as the possibilities of seducing a trout to the hook. I had not been a successful fisherman and the fly opened a whole new area of possibilities. It worked. The fly (Tied Down Caddis) was repeatedly successful; as much or more than the Pautzke Balls O’ Fire or Rooster Tail spinner. I was hooked and reinforced this success over and over in streams and backpacking lakes.
This initial intrigue has never ceased to be my primary motivating factor. I have at times succumbed to numbers of fish, and of course, the size of fish (still do). Fly tying expanded this quest for seducing the prey with the additions of steelhead, salmon, carp, bass and bonefish.
I have never been the one touting the fabled waters. Maybe I have mentioned certain B.C. stillwaters or Christmas Island. However, I know my realities and financial limitations. Someday I will visit Montana & Idaho. I will venture further North into more of B.C. I look at trout-steelhead bums as lucky, fortunate souls (whether they know it or not) and akin to the visual porn of fantasy v. reality for most of us. Does that make sense?
But, I am content near home too as long as the simple enjoyment remains: a created fly (mine, yours) tricks the fish and I enjoy ‘the moment’. Those moments, whether the fish came to hand or not, are etched in my memory bank and drive me. That original appeal remains all these years later.

I work with a guy that is an Amelia fanatic. The movie coming out is probably quite an event for him. But, obviously I have not paid attention over the years because I thought Amelia was alone…first woman to fly around the world I guess does not exclude a male navigator. Never heard of Fred Noonan and his role in this event. That said, just another oddity in the whole story. Like the pilots overshooting Minneapolis…Earhart/Noonan missed Howland Island for no explicable reason.
I sometimes enjoy a WFN show called Fishing Western Australia with Steve Correia and Ian Marshall. They seldom fly fish. Mostly they surf fish with spin gear and I find it an informative and pleasing show because of the scenery and seeming remoteness. A little research revealed some trout have been previously introduced into the region in the 1850′s. They have lasted this long and show the adaptability of the Euro species.

I would like to know more about the fish, habitat, flies, health of the species etc. Is it a viable fishery and protected by the remoteness or barely holding on? The WFN show shows a beautiful coastal region with a harsh look.
