Fly Tying: Chironomid Emerger (Foam Head)

Mike at GuysFliesAndPies commented re the SwittersB Top 10 flies that he liked the foam headed chironomid pattern. The pic was not the best I had, so I am showing a different view of this exceptional pattern. The body is peacock herl/quill partially stripped between the fingers and wrapped, with a Krystal Flash ribbing (I touched up the quill with black permanent marker to eliminate the lighter colored spots before ribbing); grizzly hackle; peacock herl thorax, figure eight wrapped around the foam head. The foam head is tied in first and secured atop the shank right behind the eye of the hook.

I have a question. Why is the foam always white? Can you get the foam in other colors?

Most definitely available in other colors. I believe most Chironomid patterns will display a white tuft of some sort at the top, even a white bead (Chan’s pattern). A white protrusion of Antron, Zelon, CDC (possible flotation alternative) are used up front. Many UK patterns have no filaments on their pupa patterns. Of course, the flotation in the film is the objective. Would be fun to experiment with different colors to see if any diff in fish response. Not sure if there is any visual advantage on surface for you finding fly as I have mixed results in being able to see it if out beyond 40′ or so. I usually have to follow the leader out toward where I believe the fly is and watch for surface disturbance or fly line suddenly straightening out a bit. Study the close up of the Chrionomid/Midge/Buzzer adult and they have these fuzzy protrusions or antennae out from the head that seem light in color. Take care P of T…hope your Summer went well.
