Animals, Climate Change & Something Askew?

The mantra re climate change seems to touch every aspect of our lives anymore….an intrusive mantra like a religion that I wonder at times is askew of realities and morphing into something with misguided outcomes for all beyond polar bears and big cats….read this at a site dedicated to natural beauty and I am sure good intentions and tell me if I am seriously that out of touch:

“The recent killings by a leopard in Western Nepal are unfortunate and tragic. The local police chief believes that a single leopard is responsible for killing and eating at least 15 victims over the span of 15 months. All of the victims have been children and young adults, with the exception of one adult woman. The most recent victim was a four-year-old boy whose head was found near his own home. Local administration has decided to authorize the killing of the animal.

Although there have been a lot of victims, murdering the animal is horrifying, especially when there are other options available. First off, children and young adults should not be able to venture into the forests alone. Second, the leopard can be captured and transported to another are or a zoo where it can continue to live.”

Great Cats of the “World”

I know this flies in the face of current dogma and the repetitive message that saturates the media messages of the day, but perhaps it’s my Western U.S. roots and predators howling in my back yard at night. Askew, and no amount of talk about population density, climate change or encroachment on habitat is changing my opinion about disproportionate weight given to animals…be they majestic/noble or not, over mankind. Tranquilizers and relocations is a nice option until they have tasted human flesh….

An aside story but similar…a friend, a cop, headed to a call…young girl barricaded into bathroom alone on the phone to 911….intruder inside…grandma somewhere in house…cop arrives…grandma inside front door throat slit…girl upstairs in bathroom on phone to 911 screaming someone is trying to force in bathroom door….cop goes upstairs…man with knife turns and comes at him…the cop caps his ass….saves girl…grandma dead….citizens asked…”couldn’t you have done something different?”

I can imagine some of you will not have the gumption, clarity or mental courage to ‘like’ this…I understand. Who dares question the mantra…right?

These things have been going on for all of human history. We have the luxury of instant and widespread communication that gives us real-time news. Things are probably no better nor worse than 5 centuries ago. I remember studying bog samples in college that showed sub-tropical plant remains and pollen in Iowa! Climate change is a given not an option. We do need to monitor our environmental impact but we should not succumb to the current hysteria of the moment. In the 1970’s we were told the next “ice-age” was on the way. Glaciers in the southern hemisphere appear to be advancing – rather than retreating. Short term effects (1/2 century or less) are irrelevant for human scientific study. Human beings are part of the “ecosystem” of the world. We are both prey and predator.
