Get Busy! ‘100 Things to Do Before You Die’ Author Dead!

“This life is a short journey,” the author wrote. “How can you make sure you fill it with the most fun and that you visit all the coolest places on earth before you pack those bags for the very last time?”

Author, Dave Feeman, age 47, died Aug. 17 after falling and hitting his head at his home in Venice. Freeman, an advertising agency executive, who co-wrote “100 Things to Do Before You Die,” an adventure-seeking and often unconventional travel guide that personified the way he lived his life…..”

“On Sept. 11, 2001, he was eating breakfast in his sixth-floor New York co-op when the first plane hit the north tower of the World Trade Center. From the roof of his building, he saw the second plane crash into the south tower, just blocks away. Deeply affected by the terrorist attack, Freeman decided to move back to Los Angeles in 2002 to be near his family.”

Magnetic Reckoning with Cows (Could you point me towards…?)

Rather than remark about the Recreate 68 Riot outside or the Demwits inside and their love fest for an empty suit, a woman that looks bad in a pants suit or adoration of an ignored negligent homicider, I thought I would post about something more relevent for you, should you become lost in the open range or a pasture.

German scientists using satellite images posted online by the Google Earth software program have observed something that has escaped the notice of farmers, herders and hunters for thousands of years: Cattle grazing or at rest tend to orient their bodies in a north-south direction just like a compass needle.

Studying photographs of 8,510 cattle in 308 herds from around the world, zoologists Sabine Begall and Hynek Burda of the University of Duisburg-Essen and their colleagues found that two out of every three animals in the pictures were oriented in a direction roughly pointing to magnetic north.

Cows are known to align their bodies facing uphill, facing into a strong wind to minimize heat loss or broadside to the sun on cold mornings to absorb heat, but the fact that the pictures were taken at many locations, at different times of day and in generally calm weather minimized the impact of environmental factors, the researchers said.

Dog takes abandoned baby to her puppies to keep warm

JUST A FEEL GOOD STORY, NATURE’S INSTINCTS (HUMAN & CANINE).

(CNN) — A dog sheltered a newborn baby abandoned by its 14-year-old mother in a field in rural Argentina until the boy was rescued, a doctor said Friday.

The abandoned infant was found in a field with this dog and her newborn puppies. A resident of a rural area outside La Plata called police late Wednesday night to say that he had heard the baby crying in a field behind his house.

The man went outside and found the infant lying beside the dog and its six newborn puppies, said Daniel Salcedo, chief of police of the Province of Buenos Aires. The temperature was a chilly 37 degrees, Salcedo said.

The dog had apparently carried the baby 50 meters from where his mother had abandoned him to where the puppies were huddled, police said. “She took it like a puppy and rescued it,” Salcedo said. “The doctors told us if she hadn’t done this, he would have died.

“The dog is a hero to us.”
