Goodbye Stewart’s Flyshop & Custom Tackle (Troutdale, Oregon)

Just wanted to say goodbye to a flyshop in the Troutdale, Oregon area that was run by Doug Stewart and his sons. After a long run, the doors have closed. It is hard to run any small business this day in age, and particularly hard in such a small field as flyfishing. Not sure why they went out of business, but I owe a debt to Doug. I took my first flytying class from him almost 30 years ago and Doug was instrumental in fostering my love for two places: the Sandy River above the Revenue Bridge & The Crooked River at Cobble Rock. Doug, I appreciate you and best wishes now and on.

Thank you Doug! Am sorry to read that the shop is no longer. I met my best friend there, he stood up for me @ my wedding, and is a stand up guy. He prepped me for life’s disasters. You guys are family! Divorce suck! He’s helping me find a good one.

I found this, and must say I really miss Stewart’s Fly Shop. Doug graciously helped me build my first fly rod, and my first fish with it was with Doug’s son Chris. He’s become the best friend I’ve ever had. He stood up @ my wedding in Hawaii. Good memories learning much from this these wonderful people. Thank you much Doug, best regards! I think of you as family. -M

Prior to closing Stewart’s Fly Shop, one of Doug’s sons did a fine job of making a new half rod from a replacement blank I had received from Sage. I am in need of a new eyelet on a custom rod built for my father. Do you know if Doug’s son is still building/repairing fly rods?
    Thank you.

You know Brian, I don’t know if Jeff is in the business in the area. I saw him at the Oregon City Fisherman’s Marine shop, but don’t know if he still works there. The Sportsman’s Show ends today, not sure if Doug or Jeff would be in attendance there. Beyond that, I saw Doug tie last year at the Fly Tying Expo in Albany in March. If you can wait, maybe see if he is on the roster of tiers for this year and connect with him there about Jeff. Don out at River City Fly Shop may know of a similar, local resource. Good luck.

I’m very sorry to hear of Doug Stewart’s fly shop closing.
Doug (Mr. Stewart) was my 7th grade science teacher in 1967 at Orient Grade School. He helped me start tying flies and took me fishing a couple times up the Clackamas to start learning how to use them. I owe him a huge debt of gratitude. If Doug should read this please know that I started tying again about 7 years ago and still have the Herter’s vise he helped me get. Drive on Sir!

Very kind words, Bill. I hope he or his sons see this. Have not heard much about any of them of late. I hope Doug gets to go over to the Crooked River now and then. I picture him with his tattered tweed hat. Yes, kindest regards to the man that taught me to tie and kindled the interest for life.

Great picture. It is tough for the little guys anymore…

Maybe Stewart and sons will have more time now to go fishing.
