Grubic's Floating Deer Hair Emerger

Grubic's Floating Deer Hair Emerger

http://www.markov.baikal.ru/keep/8m/dhg.html

Originator: Goran Grubic
Tier: Goran Grubic
Hook: Gamakatsu model F-110 #14-10
Thread: Olive
Tails: tips of deer hair, sparse
Abdomen: deer hair spun and clipped
Thorax: tips of deer hair darker than abdomen
Head: small clipped deer hair

“Coment: Simple deer hair floating nymph. When
treated with floatant it is unsinkable.
Colors can be adjusted to suggest any
insect species. The type of deer hair
should be suited to the size of the pattern.
I normaly use hair from small roe deer.
For bigger nymphs red deer or elk hair may be used.”

Vladimir Markov has a nice site here, I believe from the Baikal region of Russia. Many innovative patterns and techniques worth a study. I think this is a very impressive pattern for rivers and stillwaters.

‘western russia’ & kamchatka question (east becomes west when?)

Russia With Kamchatka to the ???

Russia With Kamchatka to the ???

A question for the well traveled fly fisher…or adventurer sans rod? Why in so many websites when one queries ‘Western Russia Fly Fishing’ do 99% of the sites refer to Kamchatka as Western Russia? Now if I look at a map, I would deem Western Russia to abut the Ukraine, Belarus, Finland etc. and Kamchatka to be to the extreme far East. Perhaps I am missing something here, where some line of demarcation exists that determines when the geography flips and East becomes West. So, when I have tried to research fly fishing opportunities, I have found a site or two for Ponoi and waters near Finland…otherwise…the compass uncontrollably spins.

Trout Tattoo (Pedro Dorsey~Portland, OR)

Trout Tattoo by Pedro Dorsey

Trout Tattoo by Pedro Dorsey

Several years ago, when the idea coalesced in my mind to get a tattoo of a trout on my forearm, I researched ink artist in Portland and came up with two that seemed to have some experience with freshwater fish (sans Koi). First, I went to the Optic Nerve parlor in NE Portland. I took a look at his work and noted an excellent rendition of a Chinook Salmon. Cool! I thought. I started to make an appointment…two months to see Pedro…then probably another four months til the work would be done. Being an only child and possessed with a twinge of immediate gratification syndrome from somewhere…I said adios. I headed to my backup and equally qualified…Jerry Ware…booked and done in two months. Now, if Pedro is so good that he is booked up for months on end…so be it. So, here is his offering to our trout tattoo gods…I could not copy the work….so I photo’s it and a bit of piracy aside…there it is… not adequate I know…so check out Pedro at the Optic Nerve site for a better glimpse of his Trout/Trucha…as usual the thumbnails do not do justice to the works of these artists, so sorry for the quality of the pic.

Hot Headed, Pupa Dropper Attracts Attention

Orange Beaded Pupa~Lucien Vasies

Orange Beaded Pupa~Lucien Vasies

This pattern is simplistic in design, but that Hot Orange bead is a great attractor as it tumbles down threw the currents beneath a strike indicator or supported by a dry fly. The bead color, like everything else in flytying, can be replaced by other colors, but I like the hot orange and hot green colors. I experimented with this fly this past October on the Deschutes R. and had some success with it in the few hours I tried it. I have not yet experimented with it on a lake.
