Fish eat fish (inciting the bite, or some provocative creature)

This pattern is not typical of West Coast Steelhead patterns. But it obviously has a good look. I imagine it would be great for Brown Trout. (East Lake-Oregon) The olive color would be a good color to experiment with in the low, clearer waters of Summer for steelhead . I am by no means an expert, but I do find the differences in Great Lakes Steelheading and West Coast very interesting. I think an open mind is important in order to borrow from all the people out there doing it for real on their home waters and figuring out what works and what doesn’t.  An example is the trend a few years ago, of using trout nymphing techniques with oversized nymphs for steelhead…this flew into the face of the traditional technique of swinging patterns. But added to the arsenal of steelheading. Today the craze or passionate addiction of a two hander further adds to the arsenal. All good!

Sculpzilla for Smallmouth Bass or Brown Trout

Saw this pattern referenced on Oregon FF Blog re Smallmouth on the Umpqua R. It was referenced as a pattern used there, so when I further  checked it out, it is a popular Western staple for Smallmouth and Brown Trout as well.  I hadn’t paid much attention too it in the past. But the pattern has good lines from the stinger to the color and movement. One good thing about Oregon  Fly Fishing Blog, they highlight well beyond the freshwater staples of trout, steelhead and salmon.

Here is the link to a tutorial on how to tie the sculpin pattern. I wonder if a tube fly set up would work as well…of course it would. Anyway..browns, greens, black..the usual elements.

Pike Place Market (Fly Fishing for, perhaps ‘the’ Predator?)

Archepeligo Mirror~Simon Graham

Archepeligo Mirror~Simon Graham

I have to say that I am a complete novice re Pike. I can only bring my own instincts to predation and that instinct borne from all fishing of inducing that take through movement, smell, color, sound. I am admittedly intrigued by this long, sleek killer and would love to fish for them someday. Not sure it will happen, but the enviorns closest to me in the Northern U.S. and Canada..seem so appealing and the big fly, shallower waters and observed take…wow! I also enjoy reading about other parts of the world where these fish are taken. I love steelhead, salmon, all trout, but these critters could become addictive. I am sure those that chase bass, walleye, carp etc. feel the same.  But, one has to acknowledge true predators…pike fit that bill. I want to learn more and there are some beautiful photographs on the attached link and interesting sites from Graham’s site….enjoy, I did.
