Once again, Berdie Judd, the renowned UK (Ravenglass, Cumbria) fly fisher has inserted herself amidst a cultural calamity and in her favorite haunt, of late, France. In April, I wrote of Berdie’s involvement in protests in France. This time she is caught up in the nudists v. libertines dispute in Cap d’Agde, reputedly the largest nudist colony in Europe. Press accounts are sketchy as to whether Berdie is on the side of the nudists or the libertines.
” At this week’s Cap d’Agde council meeting, the protests took a more peaceful form. Old-fashioned nudists complained that they, and their children, were being confronted with “voyeurist” and “exhibitionist” behaviour, including sexual acts in public. Worse, they suggested, the “deviant” newcomers sometimes walked about in their clothes and mocked the “real” nudists.” … “We didn’t invent partner-swapping or libertine behaviour in Cap d’Agde. This has been a social trend for 10 years,” the centre-right mayor and parliamentary deputy said. “I refuse to make value judgements on the sexual habits of other people. Knowing Berdie’s penchant for nudity, I would say she has sided with the nudists. Her deviation from international fly fishing competition has left a void for women fly fishers everywhere.
I cannot tell if you’re playing this tongue in cheek (oops) or straight. I have known Birdie Judd for the better part of fifteen years. I can attest to the fact that she is a woman of diverse talents and savors life to the fullest. She does dabble about in silly side of life but always knows the limits of decorum (her limits). That is Berdie. She does it her way. As trite as that phrase is, Berdie is a wonderful woman and a credit to life, not just fly fishing.

I fail to see how her involvement in nude recreation takes anything away from her fly fishing promotion. I also like multiple sports, including fly fishing, golf and skinny dipping … she is just another individual with varied interests.

Well, given the need to boost women’s numbers and respect, I think she has squandered some capitol that would have promoted the sport. Well, there are, no doubt other women, on the horizon or actively involved now to promote women fly fishers.

I fear that Berdie has set aside the rod for other pursuits. I suspect she tasted the ‘finer’ things in life and needs to reconnect on a quiet stream in Cumbria (her roots). In the meantime, I hope she is using sunscreen.
