Pioneer Courthouse Square, Portland, Oregon

Pioneer Courthouse Square. Portland, Oregon (SwittersB)

I was walking, in a hurry. I glimpsed to the right and saw the old Pioneer Courthouse. I pulled out the ol’ crackberry and snapped a shot. It turned out pretty darn good. I especially like the blue balloon drifting across the square. Tonight they lit the 75′ Christmas tree provided by Stimson Lumber. It occupies the center of the square, in the middle of the shot. Given more time a better shot would have been likely, but this was on the fly, a random shot. Darn light post!

Update: How ironic I post this yesterday and some piece of mierda was plotting to blow up the square! News Piece! Chingate! Mohamed Osman Mohamud! Bomb Plot. Car Bomb. FBI did not entrap.

Fly Fishing & Tying: Hafele’s Nymph Fishing

The book has been out since 2006. It is a valuable book re what to use, when to use and how to use. Particularly informative were the segments: ‘behavorial drift’ and determining the most likely nymphs drifting in a body of water (behavorial & emergent drifts). The book is full of excellent information. Any work by Hafele is excellent for the fly fisher/fly tyer regardless of level of expertise. Dry fly purists need not apply.

Fly Fishing: Anchor Flies (Big & Light)

Sometimes the anchor fly is heavy for short line dredging of a fast running slot. However, this short piece in the Harford Examiner by Alain Barthelemy suggests, in shallower runs, a big but lighter fly is in order.

Query both Greg Lowry (SwittersB) and Alain Barthelemy (net) re woven nymph techniques.

Fly Tying: BWO Emerger (thread body)

My experiment for a segmented thread body fell flat so to speak. The first layer, olive, was fine, but the over layer of black laid flat and obscured much of the green. I could twist the black thread and see if I get a finer black ribbing. Or an ultra fine wire ribbing that would provide a cleaner appearance.
