Fly Tying: Deer-Bucktail Hair Wet Fly

Some forty years ago or so, the Deer Hair Wet Fly was more popular. Whether it stayed on the surface or sunk a bit (like any wet fly) it was one of two flies I carried as a teen, the other being the excellent Tied Down Caddis. Speaking of the TDC, click on the pic of the TDC and note Jeff’s comment re the TDC (Werner Shrimp). Also, note references to an interesting, almost forgotten period of fly tying history in Portlandia. Audrey Joy influenced the art way back and indirectly started my fly fishing/tying enjoyment back in the early 1960’s….

Yes, this is one of my favorite flies! I have not tied it enough, but intend to. The key is two fold: don’t use too much deer hair and bind it down tight, but without excessive thread wraps. Then finish off with nice thread head. The other tricky part is once the deer hair is tied in at the bend, the body (similar to EHC bod) must be lifted up out of the way. This is has to be somewhat gently done so you don’t crush the deer hair. I use different deer hairs, but a more pliable deer hair for smaller TDC’s, say coastal or comparadun style deer hair is easier to work with. Standard deer hair is required for anything bigger than a size 14. As a kid, only orange was tied by my friend. You could mix it up with different colored bodies. Good luck
