WFN Tat & Passion Ad

PREP FOR THE AD           THE WFN AD

I have a soft spot for tat work and fishing. I would like to think, some would disagree, that I helped highlight this growing trend back in 2008 with my own limited work. Of course, some will disapprove and that is fine. I see Mariko Izumi has added some ink along the way. My only concern is as I get older my trout does not develop wrinkles!

Minky Mouse Pattern & Presentation

This evening, I decided this evening to explore Russian fly tying and made my way to Vladmir Markov and Igor Tyapkin. In the process, I found this interesting little mouse pattern by Günter Feuerstein called the Minky Mouse. You would have to find straight cut and cross cut mink and some foam. I have never fished a mouse pattern for browns, big bows or grayling. I would appear to be a good beginners pattern for a top water presentation.

The Forest for the Trees or The Tree for the Forest?

(M.C. Escher)

“Coherent, and even beautiful scenes from a distance, are often chaos up close. They’ve been organized, by someone, but yet often it seems as if they’ve been done so purposely to confuse — or maybe, to force us to step back, think, and re-evaluate what the heck we’re doing and what exactly is going on. It makes me think about all the 14,000 ft. peaks I’ve climbed, with all their false summits. Walking up the mountain’s side, you can’t see its top…and then, when you think you do, you reach it and also reach the stomach-sinking realization that it is false. The mountain is toying with you, pilgrim, playing with your mind — but all the while it’s leading you on. You can’t turn back now, because there is something, waiting, still ahead — and even if it is only another false summit, still, it part of the picture…..you just can’t see it yet.”   Mysteries Internal  (Always nice writing at Mysteries Internal Blogspot)

Check Out M.C. Escher’s Work

I had borrowed the image from an art blog and it was not sourced. I saw the author of the post was named Tiny so I referenced him, initially. Then my smarty pants kid came home and immediately knew who the artist was because he has a collection of books about Escher’s work.

Strawberries & Booze

“The conclusions of the study state that a diet rich in strawberries can have a beneficial effect when it comes to preventing gastric illnesses that are related to the generation of free radicals or other reactive oxygen species. This fruit could slow down the formation of stomach ulcers in humans.”

Best Intentioned Management vs. Wild Fish

“We measured lifetime reproductive success of the first two generations of steelhead trout that were reared in captivity and bred in the wild after they were released. By reconstructing a three‐generation pedigree with microsatellite markers, we show that genetic effects of domestication reduce subsequent reproductive capabilities by 40% per captive‐reared generation when fish are moved to natural environments. These results suggest that even a few generations of domestication may have negative effects on natural reproduction in the wild and that the repeated use of captive‐reared parents to supplement wild populations should be carefully reconsidered.”   Hatchery Impact on Wild Fish via Native Fish Society
