Roses: Battered But Beautiful

This past Winter, I had to sell my departed mom’s home. Emotionally, it was a difficult process. One of the things I wanted to accomplish was to salvage all the plants I could that were near and dear to my parents. They kept a very beautiful yard. It was cold and wet when I had dig up roses and fuchsias. I transplanted them into less than ideal earth and conditions. I crossed my fingers.

I had noticed the Lincoln rose had sprouted but one bud. It stood there for some time not progressing through the heavy rains of late. A few days ago, I saw it opened into this beautiful rose, but it looked a bit disheveled for sure.

Tonight, I was outside as it started to rain, yet again, and I notice the Lincoln rose had progressed further. Beautiful, battered and finishing with grace. Not perfect, yet still beautiful.

I wanted to share this picture of how the new owners of my parent’s old house have fashioned their vision of a yard. An abomination to the lovely yard my parents maintained. I shared this over on my Hoarding Woes & You blog too (why I haven’t been able to fish much for last three years). You can see a few remaining roses, I didn’t capture, peeking up through the uncut grasses. I guess a glimmer of beauty seeking space.

Czech Nymphing to the Killers

SOME BEAUTIFUL TROUT IN NARROW STREAMS…SHORT LINE NYMPHING

A GUIDE TO CZECH NYMPHING (A BIT LONG SO TAKE YOUR TIME TO WATCH)

MY SUGGESTION IS LEARN THE TECHNIQUE WITH ONE, MAYBE TWO FLIES. THEN IF YOU FEEL THE SUCCESS RATIO WILL APPRECIABLY IMPROVE WITH THREE FLIES GO FOR IT. PERSONALLY, I MOST OFTEN FISH WITH ONE TO TWO NYMPHS…I AM NOT SURE WHY I TYPED THIS IN ALL CAPS BUT I’M NOT SHOUTING…I’M JUST TOO LAZY TO RE-TYPE ALL THIS.

“Vag Pag” Raises Awareness of ……………………

Of course, Portlandia is not the only place, but it’s Weirdness Quotient most often will have it in the top 5 in the Western Hemisphere.

There is always a cause around the next corner in Portlandia. Pick the right neighborhood and gather all the concerned together and the causes emerge in signs, T’s, booths and verbiage. Here a car is the perfect mobile marketing app. Dare I say there is a deeper intent in the event, but I would leave that to you to figure out. Nope, nothing to do with Fly Fishing but this does explain why I do crave the outdoors more than the urban mania.

Peeing in the Public Pool? Banning the Big Gulp

No, this isn’t another story about that goof ball N.Y. City Mayor Bloomberg playing Nanny to ban Big Gulps!

“The additional bacteria we carry on skin, in particular sweat and traces of fecal matter (yes even on adults), gets mixed in the pool. “If disinfectant isn’t right, bacteria is allowed to grow in pools, so someone accidentally consumes a mouthful of water like we all do when we’re swimming and suddenly they’re subject to serious bacteria like E.coli or salmonella.”

The high risk offenders, according to the Center for Disease Control, are those water recreational parks, a dangerous combination of packs of young swimmers and lots of accidental gulps.” (more on fecal matter and bacteria in your kid’s mouth) Hey, Mayor Bloomberg go after peeing in public pools!!

Now you look at that public pool differently, don’t you? No ‘accidental gulps’!
