Have you sensed the extra tension brought to your life while passing through airport security these days? Maybe it is just me. I was always excited to travel before. Now, I just have this elevated sense of anxiety and resentment to get past some bozo’s with an inflated sense of duty. Yes, yes….’just trying to protect you’….whatever. So speaking of inflated, imagine this ‘problem’ as Johan Falcon attempts to pass through airport security with his super schwantz taped to his thigh…apparently a record breaking appendage that freaked airport security. They can never be too careful or embarrassed.
JONAH FALCON’S ROD INTIMIDATES SECURITY
So, this remotely segways into when you attempt to pass through airport security do you have a clear idea if reels, lines, flies, rods are acceptable for carry on? I would be interested if anyone has access to a definitive statement on the transporting, as carry on, of fly fishing’s basic implements. I have read varied opinions re this and have had varied responses at airports. Flies ‘yes’…flies ‘no’ for example.
On my trips to Alaska I was always able to carry on my rod tube. The last time it was over their size limitations and the flight attendant had the courtesy to stow it in her closet. I put all my reels and such in my carry on bag.

Oh thank you. I am not traveling anytime soon. Just came up in conversation with my son, who felt he could not take reels/spare spools and fly lines and fly boxes. Was attempting to travel light but without certainty from carrier (mixed advice from them) he ended up checking luggage through two transfers. All came out ok, but just seeking other’s opinions. Thanks.

Ultimately, it is the carrier’s decision as to whether or not it can be transported as carry-on baggage.
Tackle Equipment
Fishing equipment should be placed in your checked baggage. Some tackle equipment can be considered sharp and dangerous. Expensive reels or fragile tackle such as fly’s should be packed in your carry-on baggage.
That’s the run down. I have always shipped my rods, checked my hooks carried my reels. My carry-on, packed with reels (fly, conventional and spinning) was only stopped and rummaged through one time.

Thank you for the information. I suppose just checking luggage would solve a lot of the questions. Just been paranoid on lost luggage, which I have had a time or two. Thanks!!
