Fly Tying Materials: Never Enough?

I have so much fly tying materials! I do run low on certain things, like right now, I need to re-up on certain colors of marabou and rabbit strips. But, otherwise I have enough for years to come.

So, when I was out the other day, I came upon a dead hawk. It had been there for a bit and was damaged. But, I did gather a small amount of feathers for wing material. Not much, just a bit  that will make a great wing.

Here I harvested just a few feathers…just because they were there. I have been admonished/warned/shamed by commenter Craig about harvesting ‘raptor’ feathers. Hmm? What can I say?

    nope it doesn’t.

our confrontation was over a blue jay primary.

in a lot of states the only truly unprotected birds are starlings and sparrows.

the reason you can possess pheasant and turkey for instance is they have a season.
    at least that’s my understanding.

domestic birds don’t count…so that begs the legality of the use of bird parts taken from commercial game parks.

raptors are in a class of their own. game departments are very diligent in the prosecution of violators.

at the time this happened my smartass son quipped, “can you say jack-booted thug?” it didn’t go over particularly well, i must say.

        i do too.

i hadn’t run across the expression at that point.
there wasn’t an internet to spark his verbal creativity.
        thank goodness for comic books.

the only problem with a wiseacre is at some point you are going to be in a conflict you didn’t start.
kind of like barhopping with irascible companion whose favorite pick up line is “do you like peanut butter?”.

you just know it’s not going to end well.

raptor feathers in your possession will usually send you to jail or break your piggy bank in fines.

please check locally before you keep or use them.

a hard-headed us park ranger explained this to one of my boys when he was ten or eleven.

    good luck!
