Fly Tying: Dubbed Thorax

Dubbing and Bead SB

A size 14 pupa hook has an abdomen of dyed peacock herl. I blended hare’s ear and chopped up synthetic flash material into a fine blend and used it to form a dubbing noodle to wrap around the thorax area…right behind a multi-colored bead (blue, red, green).

A Woman, A Spey Rod & Perfect Imagery

Todd Moen of Catch Magazine fame put together this video of a Hannah Belford in Northern B.C. running a guide service and showing some nice skills while pursuing Steelhead. At 9:50 to 10:00 minutes is what one lives for swinging flies. Hannah Belford is truly inspiring as an angler. A nice, inspiring video by Moen too….holds your attention. Check it out.

Animals, Climate Change & Something Askew?

The mantra re climate change seems to touch every aspect of our lives anymore….an intrusive mantra like a religion that I wonder at times is askew of realities and morphing into something with misguided outcomes for all beyond polar bears and big cats….read this at a site dedicated to natural beauty and I am sure good intentions and tell me if I am seriously that out of touch:

cats climate change

“The recent killings by a leopard in Western Nepal are unfortunate and tragic. The local police chief believes that a single leopard is responsible for killing and eating at least 15 victims over the span of 15 months. All of the victims have been children and young adults, with the exception of one adult woman. The most recent victim was a four-year-old boy whose head was found near his own home. Local administration has decided to authorize the killing of the animal.

Although there have been a lot of victims, murdering the animal is horrifying, especially when there are other options available. First off, children and young adults should not be able to venture into the forests alone. Second, the leopard can be captured and transported to another are or a zoo where it can continue to live.”

Great Cats of the “World”

I know this flies in the face of current dogma and the repetitive message that saturates the media messages of the day, but perhaps it’s my Western U.S. roots and predators howling in my back yard at night. Askew, and no amount of talk about population density, climate change or encroachment on habitat is changing my opinion about disproportionate weight given to animals…be they majestic/noble or not, over mankind. Tranquilizers and relocations is a nice option until they have tasted human flesh….

An aside story but similar…a friend, a cop, headed to a call…young girl barricaded into bathroom alone on the phone to 911….intruder inside…grandma somewhere in house…cop arrives…grandma inside front door throat slit…girl upstairs in bathroom on phone to 911 screaming someone is trying to force in bathroom door….cop goes upstairs…man with knife turns and comes at him…the cop caps his ass….saves girl…grandma dead….citizens asked…”couldn’t you have done something different?”

I can imagine some of you will not have the gumption, clarity or mental courage to ‘like’ this…I understand. Who dares question the mantra…right?

Photography: Calm Morning Cropped

Calm Morning

I originally took this shot on an early morning as I prepared to fish. The placid water, old cattails, rocks, green grass and the old logs combined for a rustic yet calming feeling. But those logs had been cut at some point and don’t ask me why it grated at me. Everything else was natural, but the log although worn on its sides had been tended to with a saw at some point. Small detail I know but it bothered me.

Calm Morningx No Logs

So I cropped out the logs for a more ‘natural’ look. And low and behold, I miss those darn logs!!!
