I am linking to an excellent summary piece re fly selection and attitude by Steve Dally over at his excellent Ozark Fly Fisher Journal. There are many gems of wisdom in here for the novice and reminders for the experienced. It takes some of the pressure off trying to figure everything out and fussing over being right. Give the piece a read a couple of times.
Penny the Cat really doesn’t have many facial expressions while her eyes are open. She makes plenty of displeased sounds and gestures. But her countenance is pretty uniform…one of impatience perhaps, even annoyance? Somehow we are kindred spirits…its odd me being so nice and all.
With all outdoor pursuits one sees possibilities of creative angles, light, emotions, contrasts, textures, history etc. I have three sons, all competent outdoorsmen. One, in particular, has a keen eye for the more artistic side. Sometimes he just seems to be photographing more than fishing, but hey its his experience.

Well, I know it doesn’t make perfect sense. But, it was the first thing that came to mind and then I dissected the realities of the underwire showing. Let’s forget that part.
Here the flash bounces off the bead head, the hook’s bend and the wire ribbing around the pupa’s abdomen…hence the ‘underwire’ reference. Wire ribbing is used to do a couple of things: secure materials to the hook and make them more durable; add some weight; add segmentation and sometimes provide a degree of flash with the right lighting situation.
The light’s glint off the bead head, the sparkle dubbing in the thorax, the movement of a Starling hackle fiber in the wing or perhaps that segmented wire wrapping might trigger a follow and take.
