In the day, the Hollywood Epic Days, there was a time when fly fishing seemed to be a necessary outdoor image for a starlet and star somewhere probably in California. Today few notable stars handle a fly rod whether for image sake or out of true enjoyment. I wonder why the image trend existed in the 40’s & 50″s? I can’t really find a thread of who, behind the scenes promoted this image.
I inserted April Vokey into that collage with the vintage stars…a star, in her own right, within the fly fishing industry. But note the stars of their day, that either staged interest or may have actually enjoyed the sport. I have read that Ginger Rogers surely did.
Here is a favorite scene from Libeled Lady with William Powell & Myrna Loy (two of my very favorites):
“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be
satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”
