Portland (Oregon) History: Platte System on early roadways.

“As noted above, SE Stark Street had its early beginnings as an old wagon road called Base Line Road. The historic street was named for Benjamin Stark (1820-1898), a US senator from Oregon. In the survey of Portland, dated 1852, Stark Street is listed as an original street to downtown Portland. In Jan of 1892, a section of Base Line Rd was changed to Stark Street. This included all roadway from the east bank of the Willamette River to the Lone Fir Cemetery (21st Ave).”

Nature: Little Seed Cups on the Forest Floor

These very small cups of seeds from some kind of cone like object were barely visible amongst the detritus on the forest floor. I was a bit blurry taking the shot, but you get the idea.

Vintage Images: MGM Lion

Geeze am I on a roll of late: Free falls from space, dynamite, rust, spooky dolls hanging in the woods, demons in children and vintage images. Yes, I have mixed in the outdoors and amazingly something to do with fly fishing. But, my mind is in its own free fall so here you go……

There have been five lions over the years posing for that growl. Here is an image from the mid 1920’s. More info here.

Art & Design: Meets Feathers and the Hook

I have shown the works of Shawn Davis before at SwittersB. Today, I came upon his work again, not via the normal outdoor/fly fishing route but rather via a design/creativity/fashion route. Shawn Davis shows that the artistic side of fly tying is quite beautiful and important to many tiers.

Now, SwittersB has made no secret of the fact that he is more of an ‘impressionistic’ (messy) fly tier…meaning he is too undisciplined to complete exacting fly patterns that move toward the artistic realm. But, I admire those that do have that discipline to tie Atlantic Salmon flies or more realistic imitations that border on art to the discerning tiers out there. (Initial Source)
