After the Snow: Gritty Gloom

WheelWell Icecicles SwittersB PhotographyI am probably in a minority, but I love snow. I admit I have never been snow bound for months on end, but when snow comes on its infrequent visit to my town, I love the look, the eventual calm, the East wind down the Columbia Gorge and the drama (I try not to watch local news for the Arctic Blast and young news reporters standing in new Winter gear out in the snow/wind).

But, the aftermath, the melt, the wet greyness is not enjoyable. All the urban grit and grime from sanding leaves behind grey, gritty remnants of snow and standing water. The energy, the beauty are reduced to grit and drabness. “Ha! you say, you should live where I do; you wouldn’t love snow so damn much!” You are probably quite right. But, today, at 53 degrees, I miss the 18 degrees, 50 mph winds and drifting snow.

Hey, really nice icicles! And a whole row. I laughed when I saw them. I tried to get a shot of the rows of icicles on the palm trees and managed to get about two of ten in focus. Wrong lens for the job. And froze off my butt in the process! I know how ugly the aftermath of the gorgeous snow is. I disliked the slush. We had snow here on Victoria, Texas, about eight years ago. That was our last one and it was several inches of real snow. My grandson was two and hated it. He walked outside, picked a handful and threw it away. Then he wanted to come back inside. Now, they go to Steamboat Springs, Colorado, for the festival there every year in February. Because he loves the snow!! Chuckle…

I agree, it can be fun when it first snows. The before and after are horrible, but during it can be breathtakingly calm and beautiful.
