Let There Be Light! Get off your ass…..

While Light Deprivation leads to Super Potent Pot, it leads to ever increasing inertia in my psyche. I start craving light and warmth about mid-February as the constant grey days close in and rob me of motivation and momentum.

photography-macro-fly tying-woolly bugger-SwittersBI don’t think I am in the throes of SAD (Seasonally Affected Disorder), but I surely need brightness and more exercise.  I have become too wussy to Winter Steelhead for very long and much too sedentary with a computer on my lap. I went hiking this past weekend to take photos…a simple hike…and felt muscle soreness the next day…a clear indication that more activity is in order and that this linkage with technology is askew. Let there be light & I need to get off my ass. Fly fishing, hiking, photography, wild flowers, gardening, fresh air! Get up…get out.

That looks like an absolute trout destroyer. Real purty.

Thanks! It is actually and an often neglected subsurface color. Took me awhile to embrace yellow or white. But, in shallower, clearer waters on the shoals it does produce.

This page now a favorite. I am a Woolly Bugger fiend, of sorts. These variants are stylish designs, gladly receptive casting them on any Spring Creek/Stream/River and fish would take them presented by loop knot. These make my heart race. Mighty fine work as per usual: “Mr. Swisher”!

        Top drawer Cool.

i remembered seeing this post when my wife said something similar today.

we’re re-entering full-blown winter and frankly she’s pissed. mother nature teased her with a bit of spring…trees budding, birds courting, skunks splattered on the road. now she feels betrayed and that makes her testy.

in the recent past we had four distinct seasons. each of them lasted about ninety days. in true great plains tradition during winter if we weren’t working in it we watched it from our window.

now, however, winter sets in about october or november and leaves again in march or april. i think i have some shots of orioles in a may snow. we don’t have autumns and springs. we’ve always played the hardest in the tansitional seasons. the time between 0F and 100F has been about a month lately.

personally i love winter and hate summer. if it wasn’t for fishing i’d sit in the air conditioning reading most days.

all this is a long way to getting to the point.

go out everyday and do something. don’t worry about the rain or the snow, the sun or the clouds. just go.

i took the dogs out the other day. while walking we found some open water in a pond i like to fish. i knew the pond was spring fed now i know where the sping is and why i catch so many fish in that spot. the windchill was -22F and was like walking at dusk but is was noon.

a couple of weeks ago i got to watch the neighborhood hawks slaughtering juncoes for breakfast. on the same walk a family of racoons were going back into their storm drain condo after a night of foraging.

take your camera or binoculars and go somewhere even if it’s just the backyard. they will supply you with all the justification you need to wander about idly.

since you can’t bend nature to your will, outwit it by going out and having fun anyway.

this is approximately what i said to my lovely wife.

even the dogs snickered. i swear i heard them say something about stupid, stupid man.

well, she’s still pissed…just not at mother nature.

You are so funny! And, so right. And, our Winter here is by no means very harsh, or for long. I just need to overcome the mental doldrums. The weather is most often no great hindrance. In the dog house….I get that!

I feel the same way. I can’t wait to get out and hike, fish, and anything outdoors.
