Raising a Paw to You

“The cat lives alone, has no need of society, obey only when she pleases, pretends to sleep that she may see more clearly, and scratches everything upon which she can lay her claws.” Francois R. Chateaubriand

“The cat is the animal to whom the Creator gave the biggest eyes, the softest fur, the most supremely delicate nostrils, a mobile ear and an unrivaled paws with curved claws borrowed from the rose tree.”  Sidonie Gabrielle

Penny-Tabby Cat-Cat Photography-reaching-Family Pets- SwittersBMore often than not, Penny the Cat is invisible. Since she came to us almost fours years ago this week, she has rarely parcelled out much affection to anyone but me now and then. I can occasionally feel her wedged in beside me at night in bed. I will place my hand on her side and she does not stir. Try that in the daytime and you may receive teeth or claws in response for violating her space.

Since Ninnie the Cat (Tortoise Shell Calico) came into our lives a year ago, she has been a paw full for Penny to contend with. This makes Penny the Cat all the more cantankerous to deal with. Many mornings, I am awakened by Penny brushing her paw against my face or neck to alert me it is time to get up and feed the critters. I only receive a faint hint of the retracted claws drawn down against my skin.

Ever notice my banner?

My son, Tony, then 17 y/0, perched this Adams Dry Fly atop his thumb and snapped the shot with the sun setting in the distance behind the fly. Always a creative eye. I adopted the image for SwittersB’s blog banner. A perfect combination of photography, fly fishing, nature, imagination and creativity.

Suspended…Floating

A lily pad leaf adrift on a lake…floating, drifting with the wind…as if suspended in space.

Camping: Early Morning

camping-morning light-photography-woods-SwittersBCamping and early morning: I am up before anyone else. There is a chill in the shadows, so I seek the emerging sunshine and it offers that hint of warmth to the face. The air at higher altitude is refreshing and crisp. A few sounds carry through the woods…someone else is up early. A waft of smoke in the distance from a campfire. The birds are chirping. A few chipmunks scurry about. It is time to sit, to retain the morning calm and enjoy the solitude.

By Chance Do You Remember These?

Buried away in a hall closet at a deceased family member’s home. The memories of decades ago of embroidery, pillow cases, dish towels. Did you ever see these at your Grandmother’s or Aunt’s or your own home?

The Garden Gate

“Kind hearts are the gardens, Kind thoughts are the roods, Kind words are the flowers, Kind deeds are the fruits. Take care of your garden and keep out the weeds. Fill it with sunshine, kind words and deeds.”

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

“Back on its golden hinges, the gate of memory swings, and my heart goes into the garden and walks with olden things.”

Ella Wheeler Wilcox

The Wait, The Pulse, The Moment: ‘Happy As Larry’

I was researching a gardening site on planting Clematis, when the woman remarked the plant would be as ‘Happy as Larry’ in its new spot….huh? Never heard that one before. A little research and ‘Happy as Larry.’ All that aside, I am often given over to being as Happy as Larry with early Summer fly fishing outings. The anticipation and planning during the Winter/Spring. Getting gear ready. All the fly tying and rearranging the flies in boxes. Tweaking the gear, clothing, studying maps, loading it all up and venturing forth. The arrival, the immediate intimacy of the lake or river; even better the fewer the people around you.

I enjoy the giddy feeling and then settle into the wait, the presentation of the fly, the edgy focus. Then in varying ways the Trout takes and from little fish to chunksters they impart the moment. Fought, admired, respected, released back to the icy depths, then I try to repeat the process and with any luck the outdoor, intimate, mind sex repeats itself.  Happy as Larry indeed!

Faces in the Wood

IMG_3635fAn old section of a cut round of wood found in overgrown shrubs and stacked cinder blocks. It has probably been setting there, tucked away, for decades. The wood has an odd weight to it, as if mummified or rubberized. The cracks in the wood section and the colors were interesting. I set it up on an old garbage can to photograph the textures and deeply etched lines. At first, I saw an aerial view of a harsh landscape with the tentacles of rivers and canyons. But, then I saw many little faces staring back at me. Mouths agape. Laughing, screaming.

IMG_3641f1Perhaps, I was oxygen deprived or the salty sweat in my eyes caused this visual aberration. Nonetheless, my imagination got the best of me and I just plain saw little faces in that section of wood. Yesterday was unique for Portland. All day big, puffy clouds marched across the sky. I could go into all the images I saw in the clouds too? Fortunate for you I didn’t endlessly snap away at those imaginary creatures.

Chunk of wood, photography, SwittersB~
