Looming

“If stars would but appear only one night every thousand years, my how they would marvel and stare.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Yours is the light by which my spirit’s born: – you are my sun, my moon, and all my stars.” E.E. Cummings

Art-photography-shadown-star-symbolism-SwittersBI fancy the image more dark and brooding, less about love and hope and nature. Good and evil perhaps? A challenge to the meek, the distracted, the saints?

A Dime’s Worth….Or A Bit of Difference

flies-dime size-scale-photography-SwittersBA Dime’s Bit of Difference Terminology from Long Ago

I used the dime as a reference point for size. A small U.S. coin, that gives scale to the size of the trout fly patterns in the collage at the top.

Opposites Attract…For Awhile

bug-fly tying-macro photography-macro-SwittersB

“We are sun and moon, dear friend; we are sea and land. It is not our purpose to become each other; it is to recognize each other, to learn to see the other and honor him for what he is: each the other’s opposite and complement.” Herman Hesse

“The opposite of bravery is not cowardice but conformity.”  Robert Anthony

“Yes, opposites attract.  Two people who collide head-on upon introduction will lust for each other on the spot. They’ll tango, they’ll dance both inside and outside the bedroom, and then they’ll eventually destroy each other.  Opposites attract, but they don’t work.   The thing about opposites attracting is the same thing that destroys them, the fact that they collided.”   Anon

I was taking some macro shots of a fly pattern when this very little fly landed upon the size 10 dry (composite stonefly, hopper, caddis pattern). The thought of opposites attracting came to mind.

Escape to the Wild Side

Ah the beauty of nature, flowers, landscapes, architecture, exotic locales, art captured in photography, in our special place of the mind that pleases and helps us recall special times in life. I appreciate such recollections that draw out the times in life that were ‘perfect’, bittersweet, crazy, sad. Often they help us center on where we want to be and who we want to be.

Maybe odd for most of you, but this image of me holding a beautiful Kamloops’ Trout draws forth blissful recollections of life and being centered with nature, self and life in general. The beauty of the trout and the recalled euphoria over such encounters sustain me through the routine, the mundane, the treadmill of life. It prompts me to not just wish I could escape, but to actively plan the escape.

Vintage Post War Radio

I received this radio, a Scott 800B AM-FM radio with phonograph, from my dear, departed Aunt. It was built in 1947, and for the times was considered a real luxury. Such were the tastes of my Uncle/Aunt. Influenced by 1930’s California, they moved to Oregon and if they couldn’t find it locally they somehow researched and had it shipped to them. Their tastes were much different than my parent’s, who on one income scraped by. To visit my Uncle and Aunt, was always a trip to the then exotic. Palm tree designs, desert themes, western themes, tropical designs and that look that was not bargain basement.

Phono-Photography-SwittersB-Vintage-Post WarThe radio works and there was one record on the phonograph, “Mexicali Rose” by Wayne King & Orchestra (1941) which sounded perfect from the old, single speaker. Vintage now, fancy in the day.

Hyssop’s Farewell

I have been doing quite a bit of gardening this past few months…renovating a garden. For the most part the Spring/early Summer weather has cooperated. A recent downpour with swirling winds pounded down some of my plantings. A few branches from a Hyssop separated from the main stems and I used one for this image…a pretty Hyssop
