Contemplation in the backyard…

Was life good today?

Did I give a hand, a smile?

Did I walk the talk?

“The soul’s dark cottage, battered and decayed,

Lets in new light through chinks that time has made.

Stronger by weakness, wiser men become,

As they draw near to their eternal home.”

Edmund Waller, 1672

“It is said there are flowers that bloom only once in a hundred years. Why should there not be some that bloom once in a thousand, in ten thousand years? Perhaps we never know about them simply because this “once in a thousand years” has come today.”

Yevgeny Zamyatin, We 1924

I  think Yevgeny missed the point of gardening in the anti-utopian classic. Gardeners seek more immediate gratification for their efforts.
