Rotary dial phones, “party lines” which weren’t an excuse for drinking but a shared line with a neighbour. Telephone boxes, and operators who would connect you manually by moving the wires around on a board in the exchange. I even remember phoning a friend in Jeffrey’s Bay and the operator saying “Are you looking for PJ?, he isn’t at home, he is at Trish’s place I’ll put you through there”.. now that’s something that the smartest, smart phone can’t do.🙂

Ha…that’s funny! I missed out on the operator/connecting/crank the handle on the wall mounted phone…but I did grow up with party lines, gossip, eavesdropping and waiting to use the phone. One good techno improvement for sure.

Sic Semper Tyrannis

There’s No Accounting For Taste; Search the Blog for Much More. Thanks for Visiting!

C. S. Lewis on Do Gooder Tyranny

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”
