“One mile farther and I come to a second grave beside the road, nameless like the other, marked only with the dull blue-black stones of the badlands. I do not pause this time. The more often you stop the more difficult it is to continue. Stop too long and they cover you with rocks.” Edward Abbey, Beyond the Wall
Edward Abbey died on March 14, 1989 due to complications from surgery. He was buried as he had requested: in a sleeping bag – no embalming fluid, no casket. His body was secretly interred in an unmarked grave in southern Arizona.
For now, the desert for me and those I care about, is a place of renewal, rebirth, for clarity in life.
Beautiful post. Love your photo. Very interesting story about how Edward Abbey was buried. Looking at someone’s grave often depresses me, but I understand that someday we will all have to die.

I feel much the same way…the reality is pushed out of the way and on we go until a loved one passes or we face our own frailties. But…thanks 🙂

The badlands are amazing and kind of scary in parts. I thought dinosaurs were going to come along any moment.
