Home to roost…

The other day, I mistakenly described numerous nests high in the trees as Eagle’s nests. I had seen several Eagles gliding amongst these trees and perched atop these trees. More knowledgeable birders than I, knew these nests were a Heron Rookery. Today, I ventured back out to the area. I could not get any closer, but I had a slightly more powerful lens and I was able to capture a few pics of the Heron as they hunkered down atop the nests and other Heron arrived with what appeared to be food. The quality of the images isn’t great, but you can see the Heron are indeed occupying the nests.

Well I had no idea herons’ nests are so big, and I didn’t have a scale to measure an eagle’s nest, so no harm no foul. Always great pics!

Well, personally I think you did an excellent job capturing these Heron on their nests. It is hard to believe that birds of this size can manage to nest in trees like they do. Good job.

Appreciated. It was a bit of a calamity when one would fly in atop the other and the loud squawking commenced. The food runner, the male I assume, would return and the two would attempt the food exchange while standing atop the nest…then the male would have to move a few feet away from the nest on an adjacent branch before heading off for more food. All fun to watch as I don’t normally sit still long enough for such viewings…:-)

C. S. Lewis on Do Gooder Tyranny

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”
