Lovely picture. Thanks for tellling us this was a smoketree, do not remember seeing this type of tree before in the desert. Perhaps they do not have these trees in Arizona or I was less observant back in my youth. Ha

Everywhere you go you see Smoketree….finally I thought is this an area, a historic battle, what??? Then saw it is a tree in the south Mojave/Colorado desert area…this one had not leafed out as yet…not sure why the popularity of the name ‘smoketree’, but I didn’t recognize one such tree in the areas where the name was used: Smoketree BBQ, Smoketree Thai, Smoketree Tires 🙂 Still a pretty tree

C. S. Lewis on Do Gooder Tyranny

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”
