“As for marigolds, poppies, hollyhocks, and valorous sunflowers, we shall never have a garden without them, both for their own sake, and for the sake of old-fashioned folks, who used to love them.” Henry Ward Beecher, 1874
remembering the past…

we usually plant two or three clumps of sunflowers for the autumn influx of goldfinches
this year squirrels ate the heads as though they were apples
really…gnawed the head from the stem and munched away
that has never happened here before

Great quote…beautiful flower. I was able to grow some sunflowers this year and took great delight in them. One giant grew beside our kitchen window and we enjoyed watching the colorful finches feast on the seeds.

They do make me smile. I have come to enjoy the smaller heads because they usually can stay upright a little better toward the sun but they are all nice.
