what do you find to do when….

you’re hunkered down inside during a Winter’s night? Reading a book, perusing the ‘net, watching bad TV, creating in the kitchen, crafting, napping, working in the shop, going on FB for the umpteenth time, listening to music, staying in touch with loved ones……?

you know, we’ve pushed at zero a couple of times already

a cup of coffee and a book seem about perfect
but it’s 6:00 am and the dogs woke me a half an hour ago
I’m turning things on, reading the day’s news…
sam is jumping against thigh .then taking time for a drag on the rug (she’s schizophrenic…itchy and scratchy)
bosco noses my hand at every opportunity

    it’s time for a walk

whether a quick mile through the neighborhood or an expedition elsewhere
    it’s invigorating (not enervating)

the raccoons and possums are skulking home
the cardinals and juncos are hoping the hawks aren’t up yet
maybe that pair of rare titmice will stop by today

the side streets are full of folks who get up late and don’t scrape or defrost their windows
so even this first mile today will provide an adrenaline rush with each near miss as they hurtle to wherever they are going

    well, it is time

wishing you and yours safe and happy holidays

C. S. Lewis on Do Gooder Tyranny

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”
