Serenity…

“If you would be happy for a week, take a wife; if you would be happy for a month, kill a pig; but if you would be happy all your life, plant a garden.” Chinese Proverb (Don’t blame me… 🙂 )

Sometimes one has to wonder about Chinese Proverbs… however; on the side of hilarity or at least the memory is for me : “Once upon a time, on a sunny Sunday afternoon, we were sitting around the dining room table watching one of those shows that used to be shown Sunday afternoons when TV was free. The narrator was talking about faiths that believed in more than one wife. The camera focused on a man with a pleased-as-punch-yet-always-humble expression on his face sitting outside, somewhere, Utah, USA, at a large picnic table surrounded by his family of wives and children. The narrator said “… has seven wives…” “Seven!” My father blurted, “one is enough trouble.” Us kids all looked at Mom who had turned her head in the direction of my father. He was quiet for the remainder of the program. Priceless.

They are at least practical – a wife will make you happy for a week, after which all bets are off…

Well, I wonder if they haven’t been reworked…I saw 3 variations of that quote…all similar…someone was in love with gardening for sure. 🙂

I find that with translations. What I shake my head at the most are quotes of Nietzsche. He was not a ‘flowery’ guy, didn’t make ‘flowery’ statements, and I’ve lost count of how many of those ilk-quotes exist.

C. S. Lewis on Do Gooder Tyranny

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”
