Sly Fishing: Presentation

“Sly Fishing” I like that. I didn’t ‘coin’ the phrase, but it works for today’s post. There are many competing concepts in fishing and fly fishing in particular: matching the hatch, proper gear, the appropriate realistic fly pattern, timing, weather, lighting, location, reading the water and finally presentation, which in some ways combines much of the above considerations.

photography-fly tying-sparse-pattern-macro-swittersbSometimes the above images are insulting, challenging to fly fishers and tiers. Such simplicity flies in the face of the necessarily complex make up of fly fishing. I suppose, at times, there are required, exacting patterns that must be used on well bred, snobby, elitist fish. But, come on now, you know it is true….often simple patterns, sparse patterns are quite effective. It is the presentation and location of the offering that are often more important than some exacting pattern.

I like to tie overdressed concoctions as much as the next tier. But, I annually come back around to the reality that all that material on that hook may not be necessary. At a minimum, tie some minimums. Sparse patterns that are suggestive, have movement, but are a fraction in quantity of materials and focus on presentation/location. It doesn’t lessen the sport to experiment and possess a few minimalist patterns for the less refined fish.

Read this fine piece by Tim Rolston (The Fishing Gene) entitled “The C Word” re patterns and confidence.

Marc Fauvet wrote about pattern and presentation also in this piece.

New Intermediate Line…Rio Aqua Lux

This week, I ordered a new Intermediate fly line from Pacific Fly Fishers for my stillwater fly fishing. I had done some research on my own and arrived at two of the Rio lines (the Aqua Lux and the Camo Lux). I settled on the Aqua Lux and am excited to get out and use it soon. My old Intermediate is many years old and has been stretched tight many times. It served me well despite a gazillion coils and tangles. I am hoping the Aqua Lux will be a little less coiled and lay out there nicely when casting. I am a huge proponent of the Intermediate fly line for lake fishing (some even use it for fishing streamers on rivers although I have yet to give that a shot). The line has a aqua colored running portion of 60″ and a clear head of 40′. That will be of help in the retrieval up onto the apron. As the aqua transitions into the clear I will have a better idea of how much line remains in the water.

How Do Trout Take A Fly?

“So how do trout feed? I delved into my own fishing book library, the public library, and searched the Internet. How much information did I get? Very little indeed. There are literally thousands of books on what, where and when trout feed, but very little that I could find on how trout feed.  What information I could find confirmed that trout do feed by ‘engulfing’ their prey,…” Bish & Fish re the take

This Trout took a streamer that was being stripped back in a hurry. There was no doubt of the take….the actual ‘how’ can be better explained by Bish. I know that during a day’s fishing, I often ‘miss’ quite a few takes. The why’s of that have been open to speculation (retrieval speed, fly design, ‘far sighted’ fish). Seems the possibilities are endless on the how’s, or are they?
