Birding: Finches at Desert Knoll

photography-birds-desert knoll-SwittersBMojave Desert Birds & Flora/Fauna

I enjoy the presence of birds like in the early morning. But, truth be told I can barely tell the difference between a seagull and a robin. I make the general effort to learn but I am usually caught guessing at best. Still I enjoy their presence unless I am on a lake playing a big fish in B.C. and the dastardly Loon arrives….but that’s another story.

Nature & Photography: Familiarity Breeds….Contentment….Kind of

HB Perch Empty SwittersBSeveral of you here feed Hummingbirds. My Mom-n-law has quite the loyal following of hummingbirds that seem quite comfortable with up close viewers. I shot this through the window inches away with my cell phone. East wind was blowing hard against the window/feeder/bird. The feeder was empty. Oh my, a calamity to the caring bird lady! The feeder was filled in short order.

Our Hummingbirds, at our home, are much more skittish and rarely captured so easily in an image. Perhaps it’s the two cats lurking nearby, tails switching back and forth, crouched and stealthily wishing they were outside.

Birding: Standing Out

Backyard Birding (SwittersB)

If I considered anchored, vertical chironomid fishing a test of my patience, birding is far more a test of my ADD. I have had for the past few weeks these little, colorful gems in my back yard. Dozens flitting about from limb to limb. So, I thought where is that telephoto lens?

I found myself on the back deck, leaning against a post for stability waiting for a shot at a momentary still bird. Lordy me! Every time I moved my camera the birds zipped away. I was in stealth mode and still they darted. But, this one shot was worth the effort for me. Then I could say….’Ok, enough of this’. And, no I have no idea what this little gem is. I do know they arrive every year and then move on. See comments by John Newbury..nice.
