Chesapeake Bay’s Menhaden Overharvesting: Omega & the Union

“I live on the chesapeake and encourage everyone to take 5 minutes and do a couple google searches. It will open your eyes and deeply sadden you at the same time. We have commercial boats from Omega corp cleaning every last menhaden out of the bay. These fish are VERY important to our eco system but unfortunately Omega Protein also has lots of money to give to our local politicians. Spread the word.” Comment at SwittersB from Blair a concerned citizen near Chesapeake Bay.

Catch of increasingly decimated Menhaden fish by Omega (2009)

So, I am being a bit sarcastic here and I admittedly don’t know the scale of resistance toward this seeming over harvest of the fish by Omega…but, I don’t find much on this as a cause for the activist that pine away over Pebble and over harvest in the North Atlantic? Perhaps not the same magnitude? Perhaps the poor Manhaden is not as revered? Perhaps the folks of Chesapeake Bay don’t pack the same cultural weight as the Alaskan tribes, not the commercial fishermen? Just asking. Just wondering??? Perhaps there is a full fledged movement to stop or moderate Omega Protein’s harvest rate? Is it monitored? Certainly the Obama Administration and his enviro guru’s are dialed in on this fish oil, pet food, fertilizer manufacturer??? Someone Trying?

Maybe we need a circle decal with Omega in the middle and a line drawn through. Of course, such feel good, spread the word tools may be too late for the lowly Menhaden?

Someone please enlighten me and not in that indignant tone please. What is being done? Please note the link I provided was posted in 2009, the picture from 2009….it was a supposed problem then. The comment from Blair is now.

Stop Omega Protein! Menhaden Too Important

Menhaden in Danger

Have you heard of the Menhaden fish? Maybe on the East Coast of the U.S. you have. Beyond living there and reading about this fish, you like me are probably not well informed about this important fish in the Atlantic Ocean. Well next time you pop your Omega 3 pill or feed your cat or fertilize your plants you may want to evaluate the utilization of this fish.

Some call it the most important fish swimming in the Atlantic. Read more about the value of this decimated fishery and how the destruction will, not may, reap havoc on the Atlantic fishery.

“Like any good mystery, this one has a prime suspect. Across the Chesapeake and about sixty miles to the south of where Price stands, a seaside factory hums and buzzes, filling the small town of Reedville, Virginia, with the putrid smell of menhaden chum. The looming smokestacks, warehouses, and pretty much everything else on Reedville’s Menhaden Road are owned by Omega Protein, a publicly traded company headquartered in Houston with a long and storied history of industrial fishing in Atlantic waters.

The operation is high-tech. Spotter planes take off from Reedville’s tiny airstrip to circle swathes of ocean, looking for the telltale shadow of menhaden moving by the million just below the surface. Pilots radio Omega Protein’s fleet of nine refurbished World War II transport ships, one of which dispatches two smaller boats that surround the school with a giant net called a purse seine, drawing the fish tightly together using the mechanics of a drawstring sack, until all the members of the school can be sucked out of the ocean with a vacuum pump. The boats can “set” the net twelve to fifteen times a day; a vessel will return to port with millions of menhaden aboard.

Harvested by the billions and then processed into various industrial products, menhaden are extruded into feed pellets that make up the staple food product for a booming global aquaculture market, diluted into oil for omega-3 health supplements, and sold in various meals and liquids to companies that make pet food, livestock feed, fertilizer, and cosmetics.”

Use all them darn Tilapia!!!

Chesapeake Bay Cleanup Failure (25 years broken promises)

With ever increasing portions of our economy, liberty and $$$ going to the Feds, it is disconcerting that so many are eager, almost fanatical in their green fervor, to turn all control, over this green process, to the Feds, and hence all residual portions of the economy. This green folly…a new religion…will be an abysmal failure and have devastating consequences to our economy, way of life and freedoms. And, if the wealthy States of Maryland and Virginia, cannot clean up the notable Chesapeake Bay (no doubt with Fed $ and oversight) then how does one imagine the Feds can manage anything bigger and more complex? Much like taking apart the engine, but not knowing how to put it back together. Easy to tear down. Folly, I say. State and Local Govt’s failed in urban/suburban growth management and by the map charting amonia it is apparent Baltimore/Wash. D.C.  really failed. I am sure there is more to this than I presently understand, but one thing is certan, the Feds rarely make anything better.

“What the Chesapeake has become is emptier…. It has fewer crabs, oysters and watermen than it did 25 years ago, when government officials first pledged to restore its health.”

“Inside the Fairbank Tackle shop, men stopped in to grab Tastykakes, cigarettes and long rubber gloves. Others sat down on buckets of Castrol Assuron motor oil, talking politics, crabs, tall tales and old lies. It smelled like Vittorio House Blend coffee, like the dog that people feed Slim Jims and, suddenly, like the worst low tide in history.

“What did y’all get into?” somebody asked a fisherman who just walked in, taking a mid-workday break.

“Lot of dead fish.” Mud shad, he said. They were dead when they pulled up the net.”
