a gentle start to the season…

the first, much needed, rains of Fall gently filled this little waterfall near the Columbia River Gorge. The rain is helping put out a raging forest fire east of Portland (Oregon).

solitary…

Warrior Point Lighthouse (built 1889) situated on Sauvie Island along the Columbia River to warn incoming ships of a bedrock reef that juts out from Sauvie Island into the Columbia River. As many as 2000 large cargo ships pass by this small lighthouse into Portland, Oregon each year.

A walk up…

an old forest trail got steeper and steeper. The sound of rushing water could be heard off to the side. I decided to venture off the trail, on a probable game trail, toward the sound of water. The wet forest was inviting, the steep trail not so much. A short distance in, I came across the tumbling stream heading for the Columbia River…not another person in sight.

Vista

on a cloudy day up the Columbia River Gorge…the Vista House atop Crown Point in the distance (Oregon). The photo was taken from Chanticleer Point. The Columbia River is below, with Washington State to the left. That is Beacon Rock to the left, in the distance.

Sic Semper Tyrannis

C. S. Lewis on Do Gooder Tyranny

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”
