Bombay Beach: ‘Live a great story’

Bombay Beach, California on the Salton Sea. An abandoned shop full of debris, the dark side and some optimism too.

an old Spam can……..

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

An stone foundation and lumber debris points the way to an old structure at the mouth of Wentworth Canyon. Flash floods have hit the area before, but I couldn’t say that caused the destruction of this building. Nearby the rusted tin cans and glass pieces typical of someone living/eating nearby.

Signs of High Water…

If you look at the shoreline shrubs, you will notice at the top of each plant clusters of debris that attached themselves when the river rose up into the vegetation. The shrubs acted like filters gathering needles, leaves and smaller twigs. Often these debris pods can be seen higher up in trees and shrubs giving a good indication of how high the river had risen during a past freshet, or release from a dam above. In this instance, all runoff upstream in the mountains (Oregon Coast Range).

Piles of Debris Go With Change & Renewal

“Home is a place you grow up in and can’t wait to leave….but, growing older you wish you could return.”

photography-SwittersB-piles-renovation-collageA renovation of an old house creates improvements along the way and an equal amount of debris seems to accumulate in piles here and there. Loads are taken away but new piles develop day by day in proportion to the work completed. A positive perspective is necessary to look beyond the debris and toward the improvements taking place…such is life. But you have to be building toward something.

Trees Need Salmon….Salmon Need Trees

photography-trees-habitat-water-SwittersBSalmon & Trees….The Nutrient Connection

“So next time you enjoy a good salmon dinner, thank a tree. If you are lucky enough to encounter an ancient monarch like a huge Sitka spruce while hiking along an emerald stream bank, thank a fish as well!”
