Stillwater Dragon Fly…

Oregon Rainbow Trout, Caught/Released by SwittersB

The abdomen of the dragon fly pattern is densely wound marabou (staggered colors) in a dubbing loop. The shaggy body is then trimmed with scissors or a razor blade (I prefer scissors). A wound hackle for legs and pheasant tail fibers for the wing case over the top of the plastic dumbbell eyes. The head here is dubbing but can be wound marabou fibers or ostrich herl fibers. I do not weight this pattern but prefer to take it subsurface with an Intermediate sink line fishing the shoreline of lakes out to the drop.

Dragon Fly

I watch for the visit from the Dragon Fly

that emerges into the world from below. They visit, they land atop my rod.

And, as if to send me positive energy, they stay longer than a skittish, common bug, inspiring me,

then bid me goodbye. Soon I see them coupled, in lusty flight, gliding by in the throes of bug love.

Yard Art: The Trout & The Rabbit

This yard art paver always has a prominent place in my garden. It reminds me of my most favorite past time, fly fishing, as well as it shows the dragon flies…my odd superstitious image.

Dragon Fly Karma

“Like gravity, karma is so basic we often don’t even notice it.”  Sakyong Mipham

My long time, fly fishing, good luck creature is the Dragon Fly. We have bonded in odd ways over the years on the water. I recently completed some patio tile work complete with a Dragon Fly tile.

An underwater predatory beast…above water it has always possessed a positive karma for me. It was a nice visit. I climbed an step ladder some 9′ in the air and bobbed and swayed to stay steady while focusing. The images were taken and then my visitor glided away into the morning sun.

Nature & the Dragon Fly: Amazing

The ever inspiring Marc Fauvet at Limp Cobra presented this Vimeo vid by Andy Holt. I was so inspired by it for a multitude of reasons: photography, videography, nature, fly fishing presentation, fly tying, habitat, entomology. If you are into insects, macro photography, fly fishing, the outdoors then you need to watch it! Even you photo buffs who focus on urban lines and rock scapes will enjoy this effort by Andy Holt. Please give it a watch and enjoy.

photography-dragon nymph-Andy Holt-fly fishing-SwittersBI took this screen shot during the Andy Holt Vimeo and the detail is remarkable. For the fly tier, the clarity for tying is exciting. The eye structure, the abdomen shape and ribbing lead to the possibilities of materials and flash/segmentation. The legs, darker backstrap are equally important. I have always been enamored with Dragonfly Nymphs as a fly pattern option in stillwaters.
