Emma’s Roses…

A Rose in remembrance…

Lap Dog: “I want to be let alone”

“I never said, ‘I want to be alone.’ I only said ‘I want to be let alone!’ There is all the difference.”  Greta Garbo (Garbo)

Our 70 pound (that’s what she says she weighs), devoted Lab, Emma, sometimes reverts back to that smaller, soft eared lap dog. Except now she is a lug. I will take the weight, the hair, the moment.

A Dog’s Love in Haiku

Emma side snoozing SwittersBEmma’s beyond 10 years now. She snoozes more, has arthritis in her front knees, has had several surgeries, and her shedding is continuous. But life without her is kept from the mind’s eye. Such love and loyalty, such awareness of our moods, movements and expressions. As attuned as can be, unless she is snoozing.

Dog Haiku

I lie belly-up

In the sunshine, happier than

You will ever be.

Today I sniffed

Many dog behinds-I celebrate

By kissing your face.

How do I love thee?

The ways are as numberless as

My hairs on the rug.

My human is home!

I am so ecstatic I have

Made a puddle.

Sleeping here, my chin On your foot-no greater bliss.

Look in my eyes and Deny it. No human could love you as much as I do.

I am your best friend,

Now, always, and especially

When you are eating.

Photography & Pets: Blessings in Life

Like children, pets creep into our life via rescue, purchase, gifts, back porches……. Try as we might to keep them in their place within our busy lives they often assume a primary place in moments of need. Trusting, dependent, loving and intuitive to our moods, pets provide company and moments of centered clarity of something important beyond the tip of our self centered noses.

Yellow Labs & Shedding

If you have ever had certain breeds of dogs (even cats) you know what shedding is like. I do not wear a stitch of clothing that does not contain at least a few Emma hairs. The cars carry signs of her ride alongs. Guaranteed there will be shedded hair visible on the carpet, wooden floors and tiles a few hours after intense vacuuming. Lately, Emma has been shedding in clumps. She does this in the Fall, before putting on her Winter coat and again in the late Spring. For 10+ years we have put up with this and it is what it is…I wouldn’t trade it.

Emma CollageThis week, my wife decided she had to do something besides the ‘normal’ brushing. So she took Emma out back and sat down to brush out some of that hair. Pretty ghastly isn’t it. And, it leaves no doubt that brushings, vacuumings and lint brushes will never fully conquer the hairs of a Yellow Lab.

Pets: Cat & Dog ownership…some signals to consider

Penny Face SwittersBPet owners have a sense of the disposition of their pets via their expressions and body language. Above, Penny the Cat had just been awakened from a deep sleep. Normally that cock eyed look coupled with a twitching tail is a certain tip off to not move toward her. Heck, she will move toward you! In this instance she was more dazed than aggressive. Cats have definite cues just like dogs have signals as to their mindset. The Arizona Humane Society has a nice series of links about pet ownership and behavioral  signals. Emma, below, is just always a sweet girl.

Man’s Best Friend

I wonder if some of you deal with the same things: I seem to be sharing my pillow with some critter when I am away; there is not one article of clothing that I wear out of the house that doesn’t have one or more inch long hairs attached; my eyes and nose perpetually itch. There isn’t a place in the house, wagging tail height, that hasn’t received a swath/swipe of that wagging tail. The list goes on, but suffice to say I would never change a thing.

Emma unashamedly snoozing on my pillow.

Emma Louise, Smiling and Upright (SwittersB)

Emma wanted to apologize first for her somewhat off putting photo of her surgery site. Nonetheless, she is better, almost too well. Finally, up and alert, slowly walking outside to take care of business and contemplating the stairs (not ready for that yet). Slow and easy on those front muscles. Again, thanks for the well wishes…much appreciated. Amazing that just this past Wednesday we were holding our collective breath for a positive outcome. So far, so good.

Emma Is Half Way There…Thank You

Emma, according to the doc, held up just fine. He got in and found a severely ruptured disc and pulled it out like strands of spaghetti. The bleeding was a potential problem so he didn’t dawdle. Her weak heart held up. Now we wait several days to see what shakes….hopefully that tail. And, as was said today, by Craig in the comments section, the rehab is as challenging for the care givers as for the pup. Small price to pay. If no further complications in the weeks to come Emma girl will be shaking that rear end soon.

The most sincere thanks to all here and at Hoarding Woes that extended their very kind well wishes and prayers. Thank you!

Most Beautiful Girl

Well, one of them……

Aren’t they amazing? Loyal, in tune, close, shedding, loving. Emma is an amazing blessing in our lives. She wiggles and waggles and grins. Her wet, wagging tail leaves marks about the house at her level where ever she leans, wags or brushes by. Her coat sheds a ton. Her breath isn’t always the best. Her internal alarm clock is uncanny as she attempts to awaken me at 5:55am every morning and, if I am home, she stares at me for dinner at 3pm sharp. Maybe she can actually read? At any rate, she brings joy. I am sure you have or have had or know of such a pup.

Oops! Someone is jealous……….. Harley is not happy.
