Nature’s Layers

What causes this visible stratification of lakeside vegetation? High water or snow/ice that has receded? Probably like you, I notice streamside rocks that show the rise or fall of water levels. But, much the same thing can be seen on lakes from snow melt, inlets rising or the wind/waves.

National Invasive Species Week (Think Before You Buy, Plant or Dump)

Well, the Nat’l Invasive Species Week (March 3-8) is a good time to stress the economic impact of invasive species. Here is an Oregon run down of plant species that cause problems.

madeline-von-foerster-invasive-species

Madeline Von Foerster’s painting “Invasive Species II”

“Invasive weeds and pests are more than a gardener’s dilemma. These species are not native to our area and pose a threat to natural areas, human health, and our local economy.

The estimated economic impact of invasive species totals 143 billion dollars per year within the United States. Within the state of Oregon, the impact associated with just twenty-one invasive weed species costs Oregonians $125 million dollars per year in lost agricultural production, fire damage, and control expenses. We all pay the bill through increased food costs, higher taxes, and decreased property values. These impacts clearly show the economic benefits associated with controlling invasive weeds.”

Factor in exotic animals, water borne invasions with the plant and the non-native tweaking of the habitat does have consequences for us all.

Animals, Climate Change & Something Askew?

The mantra re climate change seems to touch every aspect of our lives anymore….an intrusive mantra like a religion that I wonder at times is askew of realities and morphing into something with misguided outcomes for all beyond polar bears and big cats….read this at a site dedicated to natural beauty and I am sure good intentions and tell me if I am seriously that out of touch:

cats climate change

“The recent killings by a leopard in Western Nepal are unfortunate and tragic. The local police chief believes that a single leopard is responsible for killing and eating at least 15 victims over the span of 15 months. All of the victims have been children and young adults, with the exception of one adult woman. The most recent victim was a four-year-old boy whose head was found near his own home. Local administration has decided to authorize the killing of the animal.

Although there have been a lot of victims, murdering the animal is horrifying, especially when there are other options available. First off, children and young adults should not be able to venture into the forests alone. Second, the leopard can be captured and transported to another are or a zoo where it can continue to live.”

Great Cats of the “World”

I know this flies in the face of current dogma and the repetitive message that saturates the media messages of the day, but perhaps it’s my Western U.S. roots and predators howling in my back yard at night. Askew, and no amount of talk about population density, climate change or encroachment on habitat is changing my opinion about disproportionate weight given to animals…be they majestic/noble or not, over mankind. Tranquilizers and relocations is a nice option until they have tasted human flesh….

An aside story but similar…a friend, a cop, headed to a call…young girl barricaded into bathroom alone on the phone to 911….intruder inside…grandma somewhere in house…cop arrives…grandma inside front door throat slit…girl upstairs in bathroom on phone to 911 screaming someone is trying to force in bathroom door….cop goes upstairs…man with knife turns and comes at him…the cop caps his ass….saves girl…grandma dead….citizens asked…”couldn’t you have done something different?”

I can imagine some of you will not have the gumption, clarity or mental courage to ‘like’ this…I understand. Who dares question the mantra…right?

Solar Flare & the Carrington Event

What would happen if another Carrington Event took place? Congress recently declined to spend $300 mil on a probable defense mechanism to the devastation that would take place. The consequences to such an event are estimated by scientist to last a year or more. Currently scientist are forecasting for such storms for the next ten years.

Think re your preparedness if such an event took place. Low probability/High Impact. It seems that this event may have a higher probability to occur than the often professed consequences of climate change? Either way, the inept government is not going to adequately handle these concerns so you might want to contemplate what if’s and how to’s if power were lost long term in your area.

Start Plotting River Levels via Gages (Safety & Planning)

With recent heavy rains, you can see the river has risen several feet into a not so fishable stage. For this river, the bank angler is best served in the 9.0′ to 11.0′ range.

I remark about this each year as something to do to help you in making a decision whether to drive to the river….or not. That drive might only be 30 minutes or several hours. Knowing what is optimal conditions for safe, potentially productive fishing will save you wasted effort and avoid dangerous conditions.

Now this usually doesn’t just happen. It requires research and observation. I know the above river is nice to fish at a certain level because I have wasted time going without checking in advance the water height after a hard rain. Trial and error at times. Eventually, you just know what is fishable and worth your time.

Also, I have taken 3 sons on numerous outings to Fall and Winter rivers and that makes you really pay attention. Keep notes, remember what the river looks like. Go home and check the level and note it “too low” “blown out” “muddy, but dropping” “perfect” then also note the river level. There are numerous river gage reporting stations around the country although not every river has a gage. Learn if any are in your area and take advantage of the data. Important for wading and boating and even property ownership. Some sites will forecast the river’s trend in the hours ahead given the weather looming.

Here is the same gage a few days later as the river dropped into shape.

A Fish in Hand is Worth Two in the Book

FISH BIOLOGY..Dry stuff

Personally, beyond identifying various fish species, I don’t care about the why’s of color beyond adaptation and camo. I simply marvel at their individual beauty. Good enough for me. My mind, anymore, glazes over with too much detail re fish, entomology, climate change, etc. I simply want the decompression and want to think less and less. For now anyway.
