Tattoo Design: Peacock, Feather and Flowers

A little over a year ago, I highlighted the Peacock Tattoo by Jere Ware (Atlas Tattoo-Portland) on my wife Mary Jo’s arm. This year, my wife decided the Peacock tat needed some added habitat. She conspired with Paul Zenk (Infinity Tattoo-Portland) to design a beautiful collection of Peonies, Cherry blossoms and leaves around the Peacock. The results were beautiful. Paul Zenk respecting the work of  Jere Ware created a magical floral arrangement around the regal Peacock.

Another Peony, more pink, sits next to the Peacock’s head. Cherry blossoms continued down the forearm and up the back of the arm

In the end, the Peacock tattoo is surrounded by a perfect habitat of Peonies, Cherry Blossoms and variegated leaves

Tattoos are definitely not for everyone. A mental adjustment occurs for those that acquire one. You look at it and go, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe that is on me’. Mary Jo put in about 18 hours of serious mind control while Jere Ware and Paul Zenk created. The results have been very satisfying to all involved.

Bird’s of a Feather Tattoo (Trisha’s Version)

Trisha came upon the Bird’s of a Feather tattoo I posted. She did further research and came up with her own unique variation of the feather tattoo to honor her family and a departed friend of her son. I am showing the B&W version because it  provides more clarity. In some variations of this tattoo design, one sees the birds are flying away from the feather and in others, the birds are flying into the feather to comprise the whole.

Trisha's beautiful variation of the Bird's of a Feather Tattoo by Pierce Godbay, P's Tattoo Studio, Endicott, NY

Trisha writes about the inspiration and symbolism of the feather tattoo: “The inspiration for the tat came from the sudden loss of my son’s best friend, in a car accident, along with the representation of my relationship with my brothers! My relationship with one brother has been all of that and more. When no one else is there, he has been, he is my best friend.

Feathers are often viewed as messages from the spirit world and is said that seeing feathers in our path is a direct message from a loved one who has transitioned… Feathers also represent honor, faith, limitlessness, freedom, uplifting… I am including both black and white and also color photo of the tat!”

Thank you Trisha for sharing your inspiration and the unique tattoo.

Peacock Tattoo: Design & Application

Bucky’s Finished Tattoo (SwittersB)

Jerry Ware of Atlas Tattoo (Portland, Oregon) did some nice color work for a Peacock Tattoo on, my wife, Bucky. Many peacock, bird feather tattoos have some part of the peacock herl. Bucky and Jerry Ware conspired to design the peacock feather, peacock eye and the peacock bird’s head. The following pics show the progression from design, template, beginning ink to the finished tat above. It will look better once cleaned up.

Jerry Ware, Tattoo/Artist, Atlas Tattoo; Portland, Oregon (SwittersB)

Jerry Ware is the consummate conversationalist, ink artist and all around nice guy. The banter inside the shop, visuals and sense of comfort are enjoyable as you spend several hours practicing mind control, employing breathing techniques…all to take the edge off the needles.

Atlas Tattoo, Portland, Oregon

Of course, getting a tattoo is not for everyone, for all manner of reasons. Portlandia (Oregon in general) has a visible rep for tattoo art and it is more common place and acceptable, so the mind works through the pro’s/con’s with less social mores clutter. It should be special and thoughtfully considered. The above tattoo took several years to work through the mind. Life’s journey can rob the impetus or bestow the incentive to get a tattoo. It just has to be the right time for the first one.

Feather Tattoo Design & Meaning

SwittersB & Fly Fishing receives a lot of daily enquiries re feather tattoo design. I have read various comments re the visitors’ perceptions of what the tattoo (displayed or someday acquired means to them) means.

Flight, freedom, part of a greater whole, nature, Native American heritage, natural colors, pretty in a sexy spot. Bottom line, the tattoo you acquire should, must have a meaning beyond some fanciful, momentary impulse. Feathers are a perfect, soft and bold statement. You decide what the meaning is for you. It doesn’t require an explanation, other than if someone sincerely asks. Otherwise, let them compliment and say thanks. Now, of course, some tattoo locations will not be seen by everyone.

Bird Tattoo’s..the Empty Nest…Dad’s Drawer

Naomi's Five Birds on Rear Shoulder (Under the Yardarm)

“As a child I loved to peek into my Dad’s blue metal compartment drawers, full of feather, fishing line, nail clippers, scissors, waxes, threads…  I wasn’t really meant to be looking in it.  Then there was the time I helped Dad untangle his fishing line.

Throughout my life, whether I be child, brooding teen, uni student, young wife, mother, part of our family is centered around the blue metal drawers and its contents.  Contents that have now grown to fill a whole bench in The Shack, feathers a big part of that bench.” Under the Yardarm

Naomi, the mum, the wife, has a blog that is perhaps better suited to your wife, girlfriend or sis. She is in transition. She reminisces above about another time. She is caught up in the past, the present, the future. On second thought, it wouldn’t hurt you to peruse her thoughts. It might help you with those that operate on a different plain…one we would be well served to acknowledge more often. For those searching for the bird or feather tattoo…another variation of birds fly and the meanings of family, empty nest, separation..on and on.

Feather Tattoo’s (Peacock In the Right Spots)

Peacock by amollambe

"Tramp Stamp"?

Tramp Stamp tattoos. Hmm, well I like them. Showed the peacock tattoos because I seem to get many enquiries each day for peacock tattoos, given my past feather tattoos and fly fishing-trout tattoos.

The tat on the upper back has very nice detail…quite realistic by the photo.

The peacock feather most often adorns a female’s back, calf or, as above, quite nicely on a foot. I like peacock for fly tying and I approve of these tattoos too..location and design.

C. S. Lewis on Do Gooder Tyranny

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”
