Rising waters….

Probably within 48 hours the trunks of those leaning trees will once again be submerged as a water laden storm front moves into the Oregon coast from the Pacific ocean. Melting snow in the coast range and heavy rain will at least double the depth of this river that I was fishing in yesterday. Hoping the damages will be minimal (this happens several times a Fall/Winter) and that it will push Winter Steelhead out of the Pacific into the coastal rivers. I will be returning once the waters recede.

Life’s Curve Balls…Water Damage

Sometimes in life, the mind gets overloaded with all the tasks and demands. You realize this and focus the mind as if standing at the plate and wait for yet another fast ball. Finally, the mind is focused for that pitch and a curve ball comes zooming past making one stand there flat footed and looking foolish. Good life/baseball comparison hey?

flood vics carpet dry

Such was life yesterday, when I came home and noticed a new garden hose in front. My wife had wanted to by a new one. I noticed new flowers to be planted in the front yard and the existing flowers were well watered. The driveway was a bit wet and the area along the front of the lowered garage doors was still wet. She must have hosed things off a bit with the new hose.

Later, as we prepare to leave for our kid’s birthday party, my wife notes the still wet areas in front of the garage doors. “I thought you hosed that area off earlier?”….”No, I didn’t”   A thought occurs, a sinking feeling. Back into the house, into the garage and step down to then hear a squishy wet sound…that wet rug sound. Lights on and water everywhere.

Portland 1894…My Garage in Portland, 2013

Boxes and stuff stacked everywhere from the hoarding houses we have been emptying out for three years. The stuff of kids that have moved out, but store their stuff in the garage sat in the water. Only enough water to cover the two car garage floor a quarter inch, but certainly enough to wick up into every container. A curve ball…me standing there flat footed. Let’s to celebrate the birthdays.

Such is my day, as I finish this and head out to spend the day(s) emptying out the garage (memo to self: this is when you wish you had one of those obsessively clean garages one sees…You know, like if I could actually park both cars into the garage and then backed them out…all that room on that bare garage floor. Haven’t seen that since we moved in) and sorting the ruined from the salvageable. Clearing room to the water heater to replace it.

Keeping things high and dry…the Sky Tent (2) from Hammock Bliss

What I do know is my fishing gear in bags and boxes are high and dry. Some rod tubes may be setting in the water, but they will be ok. All the fly tying materials are in plastic bins or drawers and quite safe. Priorities

Preparedness: Document & Inventory Storage

The approach of the potentially catastrophic storm Sandy to the East Coast of the U.S. brings to mind preparedness on many levels. Food, evacuation, waiting out power outages etc. are the norm and, of course, critically important. But, something else to do when a crisis is not immediate is document and store on a flash drive, safely stored and retained important documents and visual histories of your home/contents.

Important personal documents will assist you & others rebuild your
life after a disaster. Establish digital copies of the following on a password protected flash drive and keep it with your survival gear: Wills, Trusts, Deeds, Titles, Personal & Family records, to include medical records legal & financial documents, Birth certificates Account numbers, Copies of licenses & permits, Home inventory lists, pictures/videos of your home & belongings, and of course insurance policies and contact numbers for future reference.

Columbia River Dams, BPA & Balancing the Forces

This is a lengthy, but very informative piece in Forbes about the Columbia River’s power/enviro management by BPA (and others) of 31 dams. A lot of good information in here. I queried this given the heavy dump of wet snow here last night, up the Gorge and wondering about runoff/flooding the next few days. I learned a lot more on the behind the scenes management of water running downhill to the ocean.

Sandy River Flooding: Land Use vs. The Reg’s Sloth

The substantial flooding on the Sandy River last January rattled many of home owner’s nerves if that watched their yard crumble away. Now after three quarters of a year, the bureaucracy has squandered the Spring/Summer months for construction efforts. No permits. Your Watch Dog at work. Pathetic. Yes, questions abound about the where/whether homes should be built near rivers. That said, they were built and the ass dragging system of reg’s (the one that many seem hell bent on tripling in size in all directions) has failed this time around, in my humble estimation, to make some decision, any decision, in a timely manner.

Death toll rises in Germany, Poland floods.

While Russia’s baking in the heat, Central Europe is swimming in floods. Heavy rains have caused rivers to burst their banks, and left at least 14 people dead…

Arctic Caps Melting at Alarming Rate (Climate Change Denial is a mental disorder? Huh?)

So much confusion, and I just can’t get that poor Polar Bear out of my mind out there on the last pieces of the Polar Ice Cap…and if all that ice is melting then the seas have to rise and all the devastation that will soon be upon us.

“Yes a picture is worth a thousand words, isn’t it? For those of you that visit these other blogs, be sure they see this updated picture and send my regards. While you are at it, ask them at the Telegraph to provide the source data and methodology for the creation of the two images used in the report. They look more like artist renderings than data based 3D models. The images were not part of the WWF report.”

“Another cause for concern is that ice piled up in Greenland and Antarctica, in layers up to one and a half miles thick, is shifting uneasily. “Glacial” used to mean “very slow”: but it now looks as if, rather than melting gradually from the top down, over thousands of years, these sheets will break up long before they have a chance to melt, cascading into the oceans in the form of a million icebergs.”

Oh my, What to do?

Oh my, What to do?

“The only problem with a project to prove that Arctic ice is disappearing is the fact that it is actually getting thicker, says Christopher Booker.”

“David Neath found the company guilty of discriminating against Mr Nicholson under the 2006 Equality (Religion and Belief) Regulations, because his faith in global warming was a “philosophical belief”. Recalling how “eco-psychologists’’ at the University of the West of England are pressing for “climate denial” to be classified as a form of “mental disorder”, one doubts whether the same legal protection would be given to those who fail to share Mr Nicholson’s “philosophical belief”.”

“If one thing more than any other is used to justify proposals that the world

must spend tens of trillions of dollars on combating global warming, it is the belief that we face a disastrous rise in sea levels. The Antarctic and Greenland ice caps will melt, we are told, warming oceans will expand, and the result will be catastrophe.”

“But if there is one scientist who knows more about sea levels than anyone else in the world it is the Swedish geologist and physicist Nils-Axel Mörner, formerly chairman of the INQUA International Commission on Sea Level Change. And the uncompromising verdict of Dr Mörner, who for 35 years has been using every known scientific method to study sea levels all over the globe, is that all this talk about the sea rising is nothing but a colossal scare story.  Despite fluctuations down as well as up, “the sea is not rising,” he says. “It hasn’t risen in 50 years.”
