Corvallis, Oregon Man Desperate to Start Fly Fishing?

A Corvallis, Oregon man was Hooked Up up after allegedly attempting to force entry into the Back Country Fly Shop (booted the door) and then moving from there he wandered nearby and tried to jack a delivery vehicle. He was eventually thwarted by several jolts of the Taser, courtesy CPD. Book ‘im Dano!

It is uncertain at press time whether the man intended to load up the vehicle with the fly shop loot or if he was angry with elitist fly fishers (shop owners very nice folks) and late night delivery truck drivers. No one hurt beyond the pendejo (pen-day-ho) and no loss of merchandise for the shop. Maybe Benton County Corrections has a beginner’s fly fishing program Dwayne can enroll in?  Dwayne A. Henderson

Fishing: Americana & Put and Take Fishing

Some observations as I hang about. (Holy Taco Pic)

Just observations. Implied judgements, I suppose. Just the combined oddities amongst the supposedly normal. At this one location, I have observed the following: this includes a boulder into my truck; a drunk man laying in a ditch with a fire to keep him warm on a hot Summer day; a pickup truck parked on the side of a steep embankment sliding over sideways and stopped from entering the lake by a few trees; a father impaling his daughter’s bottom lip with a treble hook when casting, then yelling at her for being in the way; numerous people falling down the gravel embankment and crashing at the bottom, one even ending up knocking his father into the lake; an odd anomaly of Eastern Euros using multiple rods and over harvesting by a factor of 5+ (never any enforcement; guess it doesn’t fit with the put and take concept); couplings in the woods (must be the heat and nature); talkative gents, who want to carry on extended conversations with me from a hundred feet away over all manner of topics; garbage (beer cans, worm containers, cigarette butts, etc strewn along the lakes edge; fishermen that must cast out a hundred feet to mark their territory (yes, sometimes I drift too close while moving backwards, but seriously asshole casting heavy lead within a few feet of me?).

And, there are a lot of folks just trying to relax, mind their own business, and take home some fish. There is an odd energy when the multitudes assemble at a put and take fishery. I usually find my safe place and observe while making the acquaintance of some fish.

Can or does the put and take (hatchery stockings) foster any sense of protecting the habitat in the larger scheme of things? Could there be some campaign to foster better habits? It is as if the people who manage these resources have turned their backs upon basic messages that would foster respect for the resources. Dump in a few thousand keepers and forget the rest? The rest is, of course, the probable outcomes of human nature when many are gathered.

Fly Tying: Cat Infestation?

Well I have written here at length over the woes of infestation in your fly tying materials. Moths and mice have been my nemesis over the years. But recently another critter has weaseled their way into all manner of fly tying materials: Penelope the Cat. You may recall the rescue of Penelope in early June from a tall tree. Never a dull moment sense then.

Imagine my surprise, as I came down this morning, to Penny intoxicatingly tearing through a scattered pile of hen hackle. My ability to leave materials out, whether on the table or in a bag is compromised. Shouldn’t be surprising as I have chased her and done battle (you should see my forearms) to reclaim strips of rabbit, several hen capes, foam, and yes even a Woolly Bugger. In her best interest, and mine, all materials will have to be secured and protected at the conclusion of each session. My days, weeks, months of scattered materials atop the table are gone….if I want to maintain my materials.

Haboob in Phoenix (Actually Quite Freaky)

Earthquakes, wildfires, heavy rainfalls, humidity and lightning storms all capture our attention for at least a few minutes on the news, or in real life. But, this haboob or dust storm in Phoenix is actually biblically bizarre to say the least. Couple the dust storm with the heat and what a day. This was the third such storm this Summer in Phoenix.

Fly Fishing: A State of Mind…It has to be!

The Dangerous Sanctity of Fly Only Waters by Henry Miller

Focusing Amongst the Tangles & Distractions

To be honest, I have not been afforded the opportunity to fish the fabled waters, just yet. I have fished fly only water and fortunately have never encountered the problems Mr. Miller has. But, I would match his experience to a crowded coastal river in Oregon gear guys stand shoulder to shoulder and cast over cast, hook ups, tangles, and a only a semblance of courtesy exists. Heaven help the fly angler should he inadvertently tangle with with a #5 Mepps. Season openers on lakes and avoiding trollers can also be an adventure. But, of course, what Mr. Miller is also talking about is that the perceived expectation for uniqueness and purer air can be denied anywhere. Even on certain fly fishing only waters. Thank goodness not all of them.

A Little Sailing History: the Norse, Chris, Nando & Francis

I have always had a penchant for history. At least the type of  history where you find the bold print in the text book and correctly answer the multiple choice question. The whole explorers sailing forth to the edge of the flat earth seemed particularly fascinating. What sort of  amazing men (and women, of certain persuasions) they must have been!

New Madrid Fault Line & Mississippi Flooding

Awhile back, I posted several times re the New Madrid Fault line because I found it interesting as a geological-seismic-historical event. Then later, I posted a bit re the New Madrid Fault line and the current nuclear reactors in close proximity….wondering about the wisdom, given the events in Japan.

But, in a more grandiose vision, some have a different take on all this in light of recent flooding of the Mississippi River:

“The “once in 500 year” flooding of the Mississippi river over the New Madrid fault line is part of a campaign directed against the American people, according to multiple intelligence agency (MI6, CIA, FSB, Japan Security police) sources. The HAARP caused flooding is expected to be followed by an earthquake and then a “nuclear emergency” involving the 15 nuclear reactors located in the region. This will be a pretext for mass evacuations into FEMA camps, the sources say. The best way to derail this plan, apart from arresting the criminal cabal in Washington D.C., is to widely announce and denounce these plans in advance.”

Fly Fishing Industry: Costco, Cabelas v. The Shop

SwittersB

This industry piece re Costco is interesting to read, especially if you do honestly support the small shop. Pay particular attention to the comments as well, as there is much to be digested there also: “It’s time for manufacturers to quit making the industry something it isn’t and truly become partners once again with specialty stores. Fly fishing specialty stores have little to no say in marketing products. Manufacturers control the product, the place, the packaging, the promotion, and the price. The same rules applied to specialty retailers need to be followed by the manufacturers at all times or their credibility is lost. Allowing products to be slipped through the cracks is inexcusable. Mass producing products that aren’t needed and turning a blind eye to sales that are “too good to be true” doesn’t do anything towards nurturing a fragile industry.”  Jerry Lappier

By the article, if true, the fly fishing manufacturers/industry have indeed lost their way. So too have they over priced many components of the sport. Seriously over priced! Get real. Kudos to those providing mid-level quality products. A reckoning for all of us, it seems, is coming.

New San Madrid Fault Lines & 15 Nuclear Power Plants!

One of these most volatile seismic areas in the U.S., the New San Madrid Fault is surrounded by over a dozen nuclear power plants.

“The USGS report predicts that a major quake would create horrific scenes like something out of a science fiction movie, potentially cutting the Eastern part of the country off from the West in terms of vehicular traffic and road commerce.”  ABC News

I hope there is an honest and immediate assessment of what would be needed re the nuclear power plant’s failures in the event of catastrophic quakes in the New San Madrid area?

“…a major quake along the New Madrid fault line could displace 7.2 million people and knock out 15 bridges. The response would require 42,000 first responders from local firefighters to the Pentagon. Another study by the Mid-America Earthquake Center last year estimates that nearly 750,000 buildings would be damaged, 3,000 bridges would potentially collapse…”
