Multnomah Falls…

on a colder Winter’s Day (upper & lower falls and Benson’s Bridge) The original bridge was of logs but later reconstructed.

A half hour from home…

the Columbia River Gorge is just breaking free of its fifth ice storm. Normally this is a great view of the Crown Point & the Vista House from Chanticleer Point…a few days ago the ice and wind still made a stable shot difficult.

Momentarily frozen…

one of many small, unnamed waterfalls tumbling (frozen this day) over the cliffs of the Gorge into ponds, lakes and wetlands that all empty into the Columbia River, on the Oregon side.

Below is an 1880 photo taken by……………. of the same general spot, but from a slightly different angle. The photo is courtesy of the Wyeast Blog, which is a good source of Columbia River Gorge information.

“Palisades, Columbia River” This 1880s scene captured by Frank J. Haynes, official photographer for the Union Pacific Railroad. Crown Point (then called “Thor’s Heights”) and its lacy waterfall are the backdrop for what was known as Echo Bay in the early days of settlement.

After the Snow: Gritty Gloom

WheelWell Icecicles SwittersB PhotographyI am probably in a minority, but I love snow. I admit I have never been snow bound for months on end, but when snow comes on its infrequent visit to my town, I love the look, the eventual calm, the East wind down the Columbia Gorge and the drama (I try not to watch local news for the Arctic Blast and young news reporters standing in new Winter gear out in the snow/wind).

But, the aftermath, the melt, the wet greyness is not enjoyable. All the urban grit and grime from sanding leaves behind grey, gritty remnants of snow and standing water. The energy, the beauty are reduced to grit and drabness. “Ha! you say, you should live where I do; you wouldn’t love snow so damn much!” You are probably quite right. But, today, at 53 degrees, I miss the 18 degrees, 50 mph winds and drifting snow.

Please take a seat right over there…………

Red Chairs Snow SwittersBThe ice atop the snow is ever so slightly lowering as the cold East wind slows a bit and the temps rise to 32 degrees. An easy transition by most Winter standards.

All Fun ’til the Ice Comes

Snow Cave Front Door SwittersB

Some innovative snow cave builders in the neighborhood. This is definitely hedging your bets with the front door and comfort close at hand.

The snow has given way to sleet atop the snow. The warmup comes and the freezing rain complicates travel much more than snow. The tree limbs sag and heavily bounce in the wind.
