keepsakes…

memories…my memory doesn’t serve me like it did only a few short years ago. While attempting to restore order to my overloaded garage, I came upon a dusty shoebox, taped shut setting on a shelf with seldom used this and that. Inside were birthday cards to Dad, old drawings from the kids, little, at the time, sentimental baubles. When I look at such keepsakes, I am always struck by the passage of time. I do the math, shake my head, and put the lid back on the box…..after snapping a photo.

knick knack…

knick knacks, SwittersB, old lady

“It is derived from the English knack, which now means a trick but formerly meant a trinket or small object. John Heywood used the word knack in 1540: “Needles, thread, thimble, shears, and all such knacks.” Shakespeare also used it in The Taming of the Shrew in 1596. By 1618, John Fletcher was talking about knick-knacks as tricks: “If you use these knick-knacks, This fast and loose.” But by the end of the 17th century, a knick-knack was exclusively used of a trinket.” (Debunker)

Keepsakes Tucked Away………

In the beginning, your mind is fresh and you readily remember where things are kept. Those special treasures, keepsakes that are organized. But, in time, they are tucked away, not out of disrespect, but just because that is how your life becomes…disorganized and tucked away.

We are in the midst of moving now. I have learned I had a penchant for tucking keepsakes into books, magazines, between things. I have found fun, meaningful treasures from my children. Long forgotten, but capable of transporting me back decades to simpler, gentler, innocent times.

Be careful where you store your treasures, your memories along the way. If you are not careful, you may lose them.

the Burning House Question: What would you save?

“If your house was burning, what would you take with you? It’s a conflict between what’s practical, valuable and sentimental. What you would take reflects your interests, background and priorities. Think of it as an interview condensed into one question.”  the Burning House

Echard Wheeler's selection

Interesting concept. Of course, the selections are made slowly and thoughtfully for the sake of the photo, but interesting none the less. What would you pick, say 10 or so things and how would you lay it out?
