Fly Tying: Are The Materials Sacred?

I was just recently talking to a friend about a beginning fly tying class they had just completed. My friend remarked how the instructor embarrassed the beginning tier in front of the classmates for failing to properly cut the material for use on the fly. The not so delicate implication was the student was being disrespectful to the material, wasteful and to the creature that had given up its hide in the process by not cutting the material from the hide close enough. Hmmm? Seriously?

Now, I appreciate there are endangered critters out there protected and hence we most probably should not use the critter’s fur, hair or feathers because of that protected status. But, beyond that is it coming to the point that now the materials are sacred?

BS I say. My $$$, my choice to hoard, waste or share. Such foolery! Like moralizing away over the waste not, want not, ways of utilizing every ounce of a harvested whale or cariboo.

Save it righteous one for bigger issues. Like all the premium hackles being scarfed up for head bands, hair weaves and earrings. What say you pious one to that?

Fly Tying: PETA & Your Ethical Decisions

Ok, you ugly, insensitive bastards. You have a decision or two to make. Craft store, synthetic doll’s hair or Temple Dog. Elk hair or….. Partridge feathers or….. Grizzly hackle or……. Well, there are options like Ice Dub and …… Geeze, we may be fishing egg patterns after all. Of course, the fly tying issue has not crossed PETA Pathetic’s minds yet. But they are more than honed in on your hurting the fish. And, please don’t don’t send me the supporting documentation of studies re fish pain levels etc.

There’s nothing funny about being electrocuted, drowned, strangled, gassed, beaten to death, or caught in a steel-jaw leghold trap just so that some greedy, heartless person can wear your skin because they think that it makes them look rich or glamorous. In reality, it just shows everyone how ugly they are.”  (or tie flies! you heartless, uncaring , oblivious person)

The Pubis Fly cannot be far behind. Well actually I think that has been tried.

What’s Wrong With Catch-and-Release Fishing?

Fish who are released after being caught can suffer from loss of their protective scale coating that makes them vunerable to disease, a dangerous build-up of lactic acid in their muscles, oxygen depletion, and damage to their delicate fins and mouths. According to one fishery expert, catch-and-release victims “could be vulnerable to predators, unable to swim away, or if nesting, not capable of fending off nest raiders. Some guarding males could in fact abandon the nest.” Researchers at the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation found that as many as 43 percent of fish released after being caught died within six days.  (ah, meaningful research. Don’t throw them back in you morons!)

PETA v. Santeria Rituals (Fire Up the BBQ…ur, a pit..whatever)

“Neighbors of Betty Marquez in Tracy, California, are upset that the practitioner of Santeria is holding religious gatherings and performing animal sacrifice at her home. Marquez, who is quick to point out that the animals are slaughtered humanely, and eaten afterwards, says she feels as if she is being harassed,…”

“PETA, perhaps feeling that their racist, sexist, sizeist, anti-Semitic, misogynistic, and transphobic campaigns haven’t been going far enough, they now feel the need to attack minority religions as well by getting involved in a local spat. Never mind the sheer hypocrisy of calling animal sacrifice “abuse”, while they “humanely” euthanize thousands of healthy unwanted animals…” The Wild Hunt No, I am not sure how I ended up at a Pagan-Wicca-Alternative Faiths site.

Fly Fishing: Screeeech and Beseech!

“Maybe I am a purist but during the Mayfly period when fish are rising there is no need to use a nymph. I feel that the etiquette of the sport is being lost. Or is it that manners are being lost everywhere. Chalk Stream Arrogance

The problem with fly-fishing, he says, is the arrogance of the old guard. Newcomers to fly-fishing, he contends, “try to learn, and they run into some arrogant, snotty guy on the water who thinks they’re idiots because they can’t roll cast or because they’re just starting out…. Sancoucy’s Web site, www.hushfishing.com, addresses the issue: “This is a rebuke to you arrogant, stuck-up anglers,” it says. “Get over yourself [and] stop pushing people away from the same thing you claim to love for the sake of your own pride.”   Fly-fishing is easy and inexpensive, but the fly-fishing establishment complicates the learning process, Sansoucy says.  HushFishing

“Next question: what would fly-fishing mean to you if there wasn’t a massive load of bullshit attached to it? The answer is probably that it would be a lot less colorful, and everyone would be playing croquet instead.” Michael Gracie

“We look at fishing different than a lot of people. It isn’t about being on the river, or having a nice day, the beauty of the fish. None of that. We are about catching the most and biggest fish possible on any given day. Anyone who tells you that it isn’t about catching fish can’t catch them.” Moldy Chum

In no particular order, the above displays (read the entire posts) what is so annoying about reading and writing about the sport and why it is sooo important to just escape and do it. Oh, MG does turn a nice set of phrases.

On another issue:

>>Forum Frenzy: to share; to savage; to circle; to nip; to tear; to pile on; to spew; to stomp

A slightly different phenomenon: the fly fishing forum; it is the best way to capture the essence of us v. them; my dick is bigger than your dick; and I don’t have a dick; you can’t play with us. Don’t bother. Beyond a couple B.C. forums, which provide legitimate, courteous information, the rest are a cancer. If you want to recommend a good one that disputes that, feel free. (my view is narrow, parochial, NW US) My, look how easy it is…I am screeching and beseeching too.

Fly Fishing: Women Banding Together To Dip Their Collective Toe?

“Women have been under the thumb for many centuries. We have been controlled and ordered around by men for more than long enough. Modern women are forging their way ahead, paving the way for others like them. They are coming into their own and striving for equality in a still largely patriarchal world. One such corner of life in which women are making their mark is in fly fishing….Female fly fishers are a very real part of this sport, whether men like it or not….The internet is also filled with information and advice for female fly fishers. This makes picking out the right type of women’s fly fishing gear easier and hassle free because you don’t have to consult men in order to get yourself savvy…In order to get anywhere, women need to embrace each other and stand together.”   Women & Fly Fishing

I believe the above was written  about 2000. One woman’s opinion? Still a dominant opinion of women fly fishers? Do men really resist women joining the sport? I suppose somewhere there are men who are threatened. I don’t know of any. Probably more prominent is the opposite force…men so enjoy the appeal of a woman waving the stick that they provide unwanted attention and sexual energy toward the woman. The woman wants to be left alone to enjoy the sport. She does not view it as a means of meeting men. It is not a red flag endeavor to entice men. Or is it? Whoa! you say. I do recall two very attractive women that took a class from me for the express purpose of meeting men. They further had it dissected with men that fly fish will have a higher income level. The two women were also taking golf lessons. Exception to the norm? Yes, of course.

For myself, women in the sport are a great addition. Yes, an appealing one. Yet, I know instinctively to respect their individual need to enjoy the same qualities of the sport that I seek. I have the initial appreciation for a calendar showing nubile, half naked babes holding a fly rod…but, they aren’t real. They are mostly fantasy. Real women, not the half naked in hip waders girl, looking lost with a rod in hand, but real women we see all about us. I respect their desires to enjoy all aspects of the sport. I hope the strident tone above is less significant in the female angler’s world view today. I hope men can let women be long enough to let them appreciate the sport on their own.

Shit My Dad Says (Can You Relate?)

Well, I have a mom that has been notorious to her grandchildren at checkout stands or fast food counters for creating embarrassing moments in time. You know, the charming remarks that linger in the air, like “I can’t believe that old lady just said that!” You can envision her offering scathing comments about service or prices or merchandise. Then turning toward my kid(s) and saying in a quite audible voice, “Give ’em shit and shove ’em in it”. Yes, classic  moments in time with Gram.

In that same vein is the Twitter site shitmydadsays.com

“Don’t mess with him … Trust me, you don’t fuck with a man that sleeps next to a woman he never screws. They’re unpredictable.” or

“I’m just gonna be me and they can go fuck themselves … Don’t care, that’s the only attitude you can have when you go to the DMV.”

Funny, gross, groaners, OMG’s abound. If you also have a cantankerous parent or in-law you will relate with an embarrassed wince and glance about to see who is listening. Justin chronicles his dad and the verbal gems that emerge during daily life.

Man’s Climate Change Absurdity (Fool’s Gold On and On…..EcoPaw Prints)

“Owning a dog really is quite an extravagance, mainly because of the carbon footprint of meat,” Barrett said. Other animals aren’t much better for the environment, the Vales say. Cats have an eco-footprint of about 0.15 hectares, slightly less than driving a Volkswagen Golf for a year, while two hamsters equates to a plasma television and even the humble goldfish burns energy equivalent to two mobile telephones.”   (Horseshit Gazette) My Tundra, my dogs, my guns, or all, given the BS emanating from social planners and/or vegans these days. Pushing your F..ing luck!
