Fly Tying: In The Film, Emergers

The Orb Callibaetis Emerger, SwittersB

I haven’t been able to get out much this Spring/Summer to fish due to family health issues. I am looking forward to getting out onto a lake soon and experimenting with assorted patterns. It is a part of fly tying/fishing that I enjoy…the experimenting with patterns that you know just have to be successful….but sometimes fizzle. All fun and often amazing. The Orb was hugely successful the past two seasons on lakes as an emerging Callibaetis Mayfly. Fished in the top foot or so of water, with a ‘greased’ leader or beneath a strike indicator (bobber or supportive dry fly)  it rocked. Others tie a similar pattern with a deer hair wing canted forward, plus the bead. I have not tried that…but this simpler version works also.

Fly Tying: Ostrich Herl

Ostrich herl is a great fly tying material. It can be used for an abdomen with pulsing gills or a lively thorax area. I have used it for the tails on The Orb.  It comes in assorted colors and barbules lengths.

Fly Tying with Ostrich for Abdomen Gills, Tails and Wings

Nymph Pattern w/ Ostrich Body and Tail

The Ostrich herls from the plume are similar to marabou. The barbs undulate with the current, at least that is what I envision. Mayfly nymphs that are found at several excellent sites like Troutnut.com show the gills down the sides of the abdomen of the mayfly. I have a cursory knowledge of their purpose as propulsion or transference of energy/respiration, but the point is the ostrich wrapped up the shank to form the abdomen produces the feathery suggestion of gills. The gills are on the sides of the nymph’s abdomen, so you could trim the top and bottom of the abdomen, though I don’t think it is necessary.

Ostrich herls are also used as wing components for tube flies along with peacock herl.
