Photography: The Sky Ever Changing……

Yesterday, we drove up the Columbia River Gorge. We often remark how we take this natural wonder for granted until we head east and once again note the beauty. The weather was ever changing, the clouds in the sky were ever changing. Heavy rains, high winds, dramatic temperature swings made getting out of the car an adventure in itself. The sky changed on and on. By the time I could park and get out of the car, the once amazing shot had transformed in seconds. But, a few lingered just long enough for a snap.

sly light

This was a magical, biblical sky with multiple rays shining down brightly through the opening in the clouds. Once I parked and got out, the rays, save one, had changed. I took what was offered in the moment.

An opening

This aptly portrays the layers of clouds and light. The earth smothered into darkness and a peek toward the heavens.

I was trying to come up with some meaningful comment regard this parting of the storm clouds, but decided it speaks for itself as all beautiful images do.

Photography: High & Dry

This photo from a few weeks back of a shoreline drying up and cracking sharply contrasts with the relentless downpour over the last few days in the Pacific NW. As I listen to the drip, drip, drip of water from my leaf clogged gutters upon the  patio cover, I imagine these cracked surfaces are slowly adjusting, shifting from the deluges. Soon snow will cover the shoreline and then, later, the snow melts and runoff miles away will once again raise the water level well above this dry spot and repeat the cycle.

N.W. Outdoor Research: Gold Mine of History

Photo above Cascades, 1930, by Ralph I. Gifford (Oregon State University Archives) SwittersB

I came upon a couple of excellent resources for those doing research on historical, outdoor pursuits in the Pacific N.W. and beyond that I want to share. Some extremely fascinating research storehouses..gold mines.

Tended Desert Scape & Bleary Eyes

Tended Desert Scape, Bleary Eyes (SwittersB)

Living in the Pacific NW, I feel fortunate to live with defined seasons that are rarely too harsh. It creates a sense of yearning though and that creates wanderlust to satisfy the needs. When the gloom of too much Winter grey closes in around late February (or sooner) then the warmth and sun of the desert beckons.  But, there is also a pull to that Winter river and swinging the rod for Steelhead. Soon enough, I will be wishing the dog days of Summer were near.
