Very busy this Fall…

The squirrels are as busy as I have ever seen…digging up my flower beds, planter boxes and pots, ravaging the trees of seedlings and finding walnuts from who knows where, peanuts from the adoring neighbor ladies…planting here , digging up over there…some view them as a pest, nuisance, likable rodent. I don’t mind them so much.

Demanding…

Penny the Cat is a feisty, often grouchy cat. Interaction is always on her terms, on her schedule. Whether walking across my keyboard, attacking my wiggling toes beneath my desk, sitting on me to awaken me/pawing my face for breakfast or inserting herself into view, Penny is not shy seeking attention.

Bedbugs: City Rankings (Now I itch!)

I’ve written about this in the past and each time, as I am reading the article, I develop an itch…like a pin prick somewhere on my body. Psychosomatic disorders is another topic for later perhaps?

“It is said that bedbugs are not a health hazard and they can’t transmit disease. But I believe they are talking about a bedbug transmitting disease from injecting saliva into your skin during the initial stages of feeding on your blood.

After a bedbug has finished feeding (about fifteen minutes), it is engorged with human blood. The slightest pressure will cause the bug to burst open and spray blood in all directions. Picture of a bedbug that popped and was partially filled with blood can be found at http://www.badbedbugs.com/bed-bug-bites/(X)

Here is a list of the top, frequent U.S. cities with bedbug treatments. Now I’m itching again! Nasty little critters, but beyond itching and the mental imagery of blood bloated crawlies around your face at night, they allegedly do not pose a disease hazard, just that bite/itching thing. Damn, now I’m itching again! Consider this a non-flyfishing entomological lesson, of sorts. Dust mites, bed bugs, spiders, fleas….it’s a wonder we get any sleep.

Photography: SwittersB vs. the Sapsucker

I just wrote about this pesky bird, the red headed (breasted/bellied…I don’t know) sapsucker, that has been annoying/damaging my Sea Berry (Botanica) tree in the back yard.

Yet again, this morning, I looked out to see the Sapsucker/Hummingbird combo working over my tree! Ok, enough is enough. Out I went armed with…well hell I couldn’t find anything to arm myself with. I grabbed a Tiki light stuck in the ground near the tree. I waved it, I poked toward the bird and the rascal looked at me and moved a few feet higher, out of range, while continuing pecking away at the bark. I could see the damage that had already been done. Hmm?

I didn’t want to hurt the bird, but I mean come on. The folks, where I bought the tree, said the tree was impervious to pests (“Pests & Diseases: Sea Berry is bothered by no significant pests or diseases in North America.”) But, they may have not considered the Sapsucker. This Sea Berry tree has fed countless birds through the Winter with its bright orange berries. The Sapsucker apparently goes for blood or sap. I will have to admit to securing some sort of projectile and scaring away the bird, but I have no doubts he returned as soon as I closed the back door and headed off to work.

I seriously need to go fishing. I haven’t been out since October and this shows it!

Fly Tying Nemesis

Penny the Cat (Tying Nemesis)

Penny the Cat is my nemesis. Try as I may with plastic bags, plastic bins with lids or boxes, Penny finds a way to get into at least one container now and then. The results are disastrous. Tenacious, playful, sometimes relentless, Penny is also enamored with fly tying tools. None can now be left atop a table. Either way, I snapped this photograph as she moved toward me for the customary rub under her chin.

The doings of Penny in the middle of the night. I came down this morning and noticed the sparkle chenille over the arm of the chair. Then, upon closer inspection, I noticed further play. Items knocked from the table top on to the chair.
