Road trips are magical……..

“Now, on this road trip, my mind seemed to uncrinkle, to breathe, to present to itself a cure for a disease it had not, until now, known it had.”  Elizabeth Berg, The Year of Pleasures

The magic of a road trip from the planning, anticipation or even a spontaneous outing! Usually drawn to the wilds, the remote, the company of friends or loved ones, the memories mount and the vistas seem more graphic and etched into our memories. I only have to look at a photo of the Oregon Cascades to recollect decades of road trips and all the beauty that encompassed those road trips. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Now of course, if you are going to venture off, on a road trip, in the Winter be damned prepared for the worst case scenario! That last admonition did take the edge off all that mental balm, but still enjoy, but be responsible for everyone you take out into the wilds, to include yourself.

Forces of Nature & Vulnerability

ramona falls mt. hood oregon hiking SwittersB KGW

All day the weather pattern in Oregon as been a bit ominous. Unusually humid, clouds rolling in and temps still high. In other parts of the country this is not that unusual. To the East, I could see the clouds stacking up and hear distant rumbles. Ultimately, a weather front combined along the west slope of Mt. Hood. Extreme downpours fell on the side of the mountain and cascaded down the valleys of Mt. Hood. One valley contains the Sandy River.

A couple hiking into Ramona Falls came upon a bridge spanning the Sandy River.. A flash flood came down the valley and swept away a bridge the man was standing upon. The wife watched the incident unfold.

Local weather channel radar showed a severe storm cell roll in shortly after noon. The unsuspecting couple and many others were likely unprepared for this powerful event. This is something you expect in November when flood water rage in this area. Other hikers were stranded from their cars after the bridge disappeared.

Be prepared to spend the night, for lightning strikes, high water, the whole sheeebang when in the wilderness. This hike, which I have done countless times, is an easy, pleasant excursion into the ‘wilderness’. Today the wilderness was truly wild.

Rapid Thaws & Flooding: Think Preparedness

Photography-Tyler Malay-Alexandra Erickson-SwittersB-Sandy River-2011-flood

Tyler Malay and Alexandra Erickson, Sandy River flood, January 2011 (SwittersB)

A fair amount of snow has fallen around the country this Winter and in several instances is still coming down heavily today. Also, in some instances, there is a forecasted rapid warmup predicted for the next several days. That may well lead to runoff problems of large proportions, so if you would be influenced by such rapid runoffs prepare your strategy sooner than too late.

I write this common sense, “duh” post after watching some recent floods of a river close to my front door…not that close, but close enough to effect friends of ours. (2011 Sandy R. Flood)

Outdoor/Cold Weather Survival: Mitigate the Risks

At Traditional Mountaineering (an excellent resource to search through) they note that mountaineering is inherently risky/dangerous and one can only mitigate the risks. I think much of the outdoor pursuits have risks and we muddle along in those pursuits with some vague sense of ‘survival’ plan because we are close to the rig or we are with someone.

With the extreme cold temps gripping the NE U.S. and elsewhere, a stranded vehicle scenario should give rise to a bunch of what if’s. Do you really have a plan for a long term, stuck in the car event? The space blanket piece at Traditional Mountaineering got me to thinking about such a plan. It doesn’t take being stuck in sub zero temps to need such a plan.

Truly give some thought to an in-vehicle survival/comfort kit and also think of what you should carry on your back when trudging off into the woods to fish, hike, snow shoe, photograph, etc. The space blanket gives a false sense of security…do you in general have false sense of security with your outdoor survival plans?

Traditional Mountaineering/Index is an excellent site to search through re mountaineering issues and incidents in Oregon (and beyond). There is much to learn here that can be borrowed for the non-climbing outdoor enthusiast or stranded motorist.

SLINGSHOT Water Purification by DEKA: Think of the Potential

water2

A new water purification system, the Slingshot, emerging from DEKA RESEARCH

Scientist and inventor, Dean Kamen, is responsible for the innovative efforts at DEKA RESEARCH. This Slingshot Water Purifier system has been expensively floating around for at least 10 years. It is reportedly quite efficient at producing pure water from very impure sources. Once the price can be more affordable, the consequences for water challenged areas of the world will be profound.

“One Slingshot unit can purify up to 300,000 liters of water each year — enough daily drinking water for roughly 300 people — producing 10 gallons of clean water an hour while consuming less than 1 kilowatt of electricity, which is less than the amount of power needed to run a standard handheld hair dryer. The unit can be plugged into the local grid or can be powered by other locally available and renewable power sources such as solar cells, batteries, or another DEKA invention — the Stirling electric generator, which can be powered by biogases such as methane from local waste sources.” (X)

Solar Flare & the Carrington Event

What would happen if another Carrington Event took place? Congress recently declined to spend $300 mil on a probable defense mechanism to the devastation that would take place. The consequences to such an event are estimated by scientist to last a year or more. Currently scientist are forecasting for such storms for the next ten years.

Think re your preparedness if such an event took place. Low probability/High Impact. It seems that this event may have a higher probability to occur than the often professed consequences of climate change? Either way, the inept government is not going to adequately handle these concerns so you might want to contemplate what if’s and how to’s if power were lost long term in your area.

Preparedness: Document & Inventory Storage

The approach of the potentially catastrophic storm Sandy to the East Coast of the U.S. brings to mind preparedness on many levels. Food, evacuation, waiting out power outages etc. are the norm and, of course, critically important. But, something else to do when a crisis is not immediate is document and store on a flash drive, safely stored and retained important documents and visual histories of your home/contents.

Important personal documents will assist you & others rebuild your
life after a disaster. Establish digital copies of the following on a password protected flash drive and keep it with your survival gear: Wills, Trusts, Deeds, Titles, Personal & Family records, to include medical records legal & financial documents, Birth certificates Account numbers, Copies of licenses & permits, Home inventory lists, pictures/videos of your home & belongings, and of course insurance policies and contact numbers for future reference.
