Privacy, Solitude………

“We live, in fact, in a world starved for solitude, silence, and privacy; and therefore, starved for meditation and true friendship.” C.S. Lewis

“Habit rules the unreflecting herd.” William Wordsworth

“Bewilderment increases in the presence of the mirrors.” Tarjei Vesaas

“There’s just something unsettling about studying your reflection. It’s not a matter of being dissatisfied with your face or of being embarrassed by your vanity. Maybe it’s that when you gaze into your own eyes, you don’t see what you wish to see—or glimpse something that you wish weren’t there.” Dean Koontz

On a more positive note: I was attending a yard/garden show. One vendor, his first such show, was displaying assorted wooden designs. This starburst pattern caught my eye because the mirrors were so beautifully inlaid that at first I thought I was looking through the holes until I realized I was looking at the reflections of the nearby grass. The pieces were unique from the usual copy cat/cookie cutter yard art one finds. And, yes there are those times we actually like what we see.

Reflections & Life

“We always see our worst selves. Our most vulnerable selves. We need someone else to get close enough to tell us we’re wrong. Someone we trust.” David Levithan

“A lake is a landscape’s most beautiful and expressive feature. It is Earth’s eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature.” Henry David Thoreau

“…real childhood scars heal, but not when band-aids replace self-reflection.” Cameron Conaway

Life’s Pace & Our Awareness of What?

How often the mind is dancing about in some frenetic manner. If only we could slow down and enjoy. If only there was less going on and the pace slowed. Then what? Sometimes the pace slows a lot and the to do list evaporates. Suddenly you realize that it may not just be the pace. It may be a disconnection within regardless of the pace. Images like the one below are, for me, far beyond the visual beauty or composition. For me it elicits calmness and hopefully self reflection to be a better person. If I take the time to self reflect in honesty.

“Slow down and enjoy life. It’s not only the scenery you miss by going too fast–you also miss the sense of where you are going and why.”  Eddie Cantor

“In truth I suspect that merely slowing down is not a very satisfying answer. What I need has less to do with my pace of life than my peace of life. At any speed, I crave a deep and lasting inner peace. And if it’s solace I’m after, I don’t need to pace myself like a turtle, change jobs or set up house on a quiet island. It is usually frenetic living, not high energy, that robs my peace of mind.”   Steve Goodier

Photography: Pondering Images & Life……………

Toys BW SwittersBSwittersB & Fly Fishing: What in the world do these images have to do with anything related to  the outdoors that SwittersB enjoys (fly fishing, fly tying, photography, travel, camping, nature, hiking…..)?

The pictures evoke a passage in life, a transition between life & deaths, dreams & realities, the past & the future, old age & youth, make believe & no imagination, broken health & vitality. That is what these family pictures bring out of my mind, my heart. What was and is lost or what can be right before me to celebrate.

That positive direction is always enhanced for me by wetting a line, planning a trip, celebrating family, seeing the beauty right in front of us, in the moment, not just the past.
