Sexy This….Sexy That: Really?

I have noticed of late that things are getting just too sexy out there. I mean it use to be somewhat clear what was visually sexy, at least from my point of view. But now it seems sexiness is attaching itself to all manner of pursuits.

old sexy?

It seems like only yesterday that ‘sexy’ in the fly fishing realm was pretty recognizable

But somehow, my testosterone depletion has caused me to miss the apparently enticing changes in what is sexy out there…..

-ping pong-gardening-Mountaineering-cookingNow, I have to admit that on occasion SwittersB has used the tag ‘sexy’, but I believe the use was of a more traditional use (excepting the marabou).

sexy swittersbToday, fly rods, fish porn, reels, lines, waders, boots, destinations, fly patterns, insects and materials are sexy. Hell, if ping pong can be sexy anything can be sexy I suppose.

-sexy paintsOk, I vow to do better in misusing the tag ‘sexy’.

Photography: Beautiful Curves

Pink Panther JH SwittersB

Oh my, I hope some of you weren’t looking or something different? Before you leave though, admit that the curves of this hook and the enticing flare of the hackle lends itself a seductive quality that is not only pleasing to the tier, the fly fisher, but also the powerful Steelhead.

The Pink Panther (Jack Hagan, Portland, Oregon Pattern) here was tied on an Alex Jackson Spey Hook (Daiichi 2052 nickel). The Edge Bright abdomen positively glows. Dyed Guinea Fowl hackle lends color to the thorax area. A beautiful Steelhead pattern. Attraction, Excitation to provoke a response.

Photography: Diminutive Damsels

Damsel Collage 2

I was going to lead with Sexy Damsels, but opted for Diminutive. Both are probably too provocative for the perverts out there. I mean when I use Nymphs, I get all manner of visits from those less concerned with entomology and fly fishing and more with waif like female forms. Well, the Damselfly is worthy of fly porn representation because in its own right, it is enticing to Trout. Double Click on Image for better look at patterns.

The diminutive Damselfly is a staple enticer pattern for lakes/stillwaters. Fish it on an Intermediate or Floating line on a more horizontal plane. I recall reading long ago, somewhere, that a Damsel pattern should be fished either parallel to the shoreline or toward the shoreline. I have caught Trout all over lakes, in the upper strata, regardless of direction of retrieve, BUT I have had the most success closer to the shoreline/reeds/structure with short strips/figure 8 retrieves…slow and easy.

Tan, Brown, Olive, Lt. Green colors all produce. Wind drifting/pulling the fly behind on the shoals or retrieving by hand along the shoreline, the Damselfly patterns are an essential option for lakes. Research the life cycle of Damselflies and how they move when in the water. Adjust your visualization/retrieve accordingly.

A Thing of Beauty…That Transcends ‘Porn’

Photography is a wonderful endeavor. It captures such magnitude, at times. Beauty, passion, energy, awe and just plain pleasure. Such is the case for me, with certain images of fish. There are many in my circle of fly fishers, or let’s say fishermen in general, that are greatly pleased with the beauty of a fish.

The term ‘fish porn’ arose a few years ago to capture that energy one feels of looking at a beautiful fish that subconsciously replicates something sexy, curvy, plump, sexy, powerful etc.  Sometimes, a thing of beauty transcends the provocative porn label…I know it does.

A couple of things, that I have come to take for granted, should be noted for those that visit here for the images or my blazing charm…the photos of fish that are so gorgeous have been taken by my wife or son and it is important to note that the fish are released back into the waters unharmed.

I do get the occasional comment re ‘good eating’ or ‘tasty’. Short of a few hatchery (“put and take” resource) steelhead or salmon, I rarely kill any fish. I long ago stopped killing trout because they often went to waste. There are hatchery trout that are also there for “put and take” enjoyment. I just don’t bother with it anymore. The above Rainbow Trout is too glorious for me to harvest it for a meal.
